Drag Challenge Round 3 - JapShow Santa Pod 18/19th June

Only just got back - some dramas with John's car! Report and results later if I feel up to it!

Got home just before 1 this morning on the back of a transporter. I'll be popular this morning as I think the driver managed to wake the whole street up getting the car off.

Broke a drivshaft on my first run so the car was parked up all day. Makes me wonder if I should have stayed with UJ's! I'd like to find the cause but that may not happen. If its just a random failure, that's fine but if its due to the car setup then I need to address it. I've got a spare set of new auto shaft so I'll have to look at modding it to fit an R200, anyone got any info on doing this? I Know its often done. Anyway, still had an enjoyable day at the pod, as usual.

Well at least you got there :D lol

My ignition system died on me Saturday morning and i couldn't get the parts till Sunday morning to fix it.

Silver car is now back on the road and ready for round 4 so see you there guys :)

Bad luck mate **** happens hope you can fix it without much cost. Well lets look on the bright side at least it may have give us all a chance to catch you up a bit in the points table.

AA were fine coming on site, it just took a long time for them to arrive. Then when they finally got there I was told they had to drop arother car off before me so that added at least another hour to the trip.

A few pics to brightened up my day.

Mmmmm.... not all bad then

John, stick some standard shafts on it and carry a spare. So the AA aren't bothered if you use the car in competition then?

Is this a "compare and contrast" Pro vs Ho' ?

Results later - waiting for some last minute confirmations on reaction times...

Meanwhile, this will keep you entertained:

Thanks Paul S.
The Project Z didn't better the 6.8 from Saturday, but raised the terminal to a staggering 212 mph. Lost out in the final taking too long to stage and then trying to burn down the opposition...

Now where was I when that was going on??

Good to see everyone, I took a few pics that I'll add to this thread later.

John, nightmare wait, but glad you got the car home safely in the end, even if it did'nt impress the neighbours.

Really impressed by John and Darren's cars, anyone who hasnt seen them needs to get to an event, same goes for Ian Patmore's car, he made it on the Saturday, was good to see how much interest these cars created from the younger generation at the pod.

Hmm, good fun, pity not around on Sun, but research to do....

So, my first time ever down the strip, and probably the only real time giving the z a bit more wellie than on the public roads.

1st run, flustered the rpm at the start, too much, and by the time I dropped it down, the lights had gone...used run as a test/how it feels (as would the rest of the day really)

2nd run, put the rpm 2500-3000rpms went, only for the car to bog down, and for me to recover....

3rd run, (still poor reaction time) got the rpm right, rear tyres chirpped, and away I went for my best run.

I know a bit more now, what I need to do (thinking about it, I don't glance at the rev gauge whilst in 1st and 2nd) only going by feel what rpm I am doing (thus not utilizing them fully). Did not glance at rev gauge until in third, approaching 6000rpm, when I decided to change to 4th. So, in future I have to use more of the rpm in 1st and 2nd, and leave in third for the line crossing (if I can). And to press the throttle more...still getting used to driving the car as hard (plus need another rolling road tune -as not quite there). A lot of room for improvement (mainly in me) but very pleased (considering open diff and the wrong gearbox -ratios)

A big congrat to George (Mr G) who was also on first ever runs, and gradually improved over the weekend.

Yes, great fun all things considered.I reckon I might match Mike Brown if I avoid the wet patch at the start next time :)
on Darren's assurance that 3 runs in a 10 hour day is NOT representative, I'll def do another.

Thanks Ian and George for the wire and pliers. I've now got lock washers and nylocs on the propshaft!

Still a long way to go to match me or Burns on the "number of miles on the back of a recovery truck." record tho.

Hopefully now that I said that I won't come a cropper on July 3rd. :driving:

I've updated and attached the Hall of Fame together with the Top Tens in class - only 13 places left in the HoF before times start to drop off the end (it started with 48 entries 6 years ago)

Well done to Ian and George for getting into the record books :)

George makes 3rd fastest in class 3, not far off the top slot and kicks out Mr F's old IMSA kit 280ZX out of the tables.

His car with Frank Marino's Z31 would see some more good head to head racing - where are you Frank ??:driving:

Rob, thanks for updating so quickly, will be more fun with more people for sure.

Jon you're welcome, you also deserve a MacGyver award for most resourceful member of the day:

Jon Bills developed a vibration on his way to the pod, yet managed to temporarily fix it using limited resources and still run a respectable time.
