260Z Project - 260Z GT-R

Been sorting out a lot of things for the swap like trying to get the correct LSD because I was sent the wrong one, modding my diffuser plate for the intercooler, drawing up a blueprint for my catch tank, etc.

Got some spacers machined, spacer for the turbo side mount because I think the oil pan will be too close to the cross member without it and some spacers to make the bracket for my crank trigger sit correctly with my custom sump.

My parts came back from getting Ceramic Coated by Zircotec, it better work well because it wasn't cheap, but I believe it should make a good difference to the rear turbo as the front turbo elbow sits very close to it, and hopefully it keeps the twin turbo outlet piping a bit cooler as well.

Thats about all that's been worth taking photos of.

It made me laugh a little when you mentioned you were trying to do your best on the budget you had. I was thinking you didn't have a budget after looking at what you've bought so far. We are certainly at different ends of the scale with regard to budget.

Keep the pictures coming as you're building a truly superb hybrid that will undoubtedly be one of the best around.

Thanks Johny, glad you appreciate my work.

Believe it or not, I do have a budget, and its well over it at the moment, everything is working out more expensive than I thought, but its almost over now and I'm looking forward to having some money again. We all know a project like this is never finished, but at least that's the main parts finished with.

Work has begun on the swap

Loaded up with the last few remaining parts

DSCF1638.jpg

Fitted boost switch, the switch beside it will have a black cover over it and will be for anti-lag, the hole on the square cover behind will have a switch for tunring on my data logging.

DSCF1643.jpg

Modifications to intercooler work, fits well now, had a test fit,

Last mileage of the L26, kind of sad really.

DSCF1640.jpg

Guy who is giving me a hand with the swap has a dog and the p***k destroyed my gauges, all wires are ruined and the fronts are all scratched, I've already sent them off for repair and he will be paying the costs.

DSCF1656.jpg

Old engine is out and the RB is almost ready for test fit which will be happening on Satuday:

DSCF1705.jpg

Still not sure if this will clear the cross member, if it does it will be super tight.

I ordered my fuel line setup today and I couldn't believe it when the bill came to £558, and that's with me making it as cheap as possible, I haven't even gone for braided lines at the rear and what braided lines I do have are mostly rubber rather than Teflon. This is something I can upgrade in the future, after the pain of paying that amount has gone

This project looks like it's going well. All the best for Sat. Good to see a money no object project!
Thanks. Its definitely not a money no object project, I've had to work and save hard for this and sacrifice other things. If money was no object I could make this way better, got loads of ideas but not the cash to see them through. Money it super tight at the moment so really looking forward to this being done.

Its in :D

Rubber is fine, but doesn't last as long with todays fuels. Less of a problem for you as your car is used more, but my car is often stored for 5 or 6 month at a time and its then that the fuel eats through the rubber.

Was going to run Teflon lines the whole way, but that required 10 metres of line and even without fittings starting at £27 each that would have been £550

Hey Ian!

Really impressed with the work you have done so far! I cant wait to get mine to a stage when I'm building it up rather than repairing turd!

I'm really interested in your rear brake setup. I too am looking at running Wilwoods on the front and have found suppliers for these. Where did you get your rear setup from?

Also, what are you planning on doing with your L26?

Thanks, really glad its almost at the finished stage, can't wait to drive it. The repairing rust stage certainly isn't the most exciting of stages.

My rear brake setup is excellent, big part of the reason my car can stop quicker than most top modern sportscars and be really stable while doing so. It perfectly balances out the wilwoods on the front.

My kit was made by a guy called Nigel on the Hybrid Z forum, my kit was a prototype but it fitted perfectly, there are no kits left at the moment but he was planning on doing another run so get it touch with him. Its well worth it, best setup available imo.

Not sure what to do with the L26, if I worked at home rather than away I'd be temped to make a big go kart chassis for it and use it for messing about in the fields. It seems a shame to eave it sitting in storage so I'm hoping someone wants to buy it.

I'll change the lines to Teflon later on when I can afford it just to be sure.

Still making Progress:

Fuel line setup, hard to believe this lot costs £560.

Fuel lines are done, FPR fitted, intercooler and radiator fitted, throttle cable is fitted, LSD is going in today along with 4.11 final drive, propshaft should be ready tomorrow.

Almost there, got to work out a solution for the top radiator hose, trim my intercooler diffuser panel, fit the sump tray, prop shaft and slave cylinder and that's it for the outside apart from intake, intercooler and exhaust piping for which I am trying to find someone who can do it.

I actually got this home on Wednesday but I've so busy ever since that I had no time to update, wed, Thursday and Friday I was working on it all day until 11pm. Got the wiring finished, switches wired in, dash fitted, spacers fitted, interior cleaned, top coolant hose on and filled her with coolant, adjusted the mapping a bit, fitted vac lines and general tidying. Pretty much there now apart from piping (downpipe, exhaust, intercooler) this is meant to be happening next week.

You are a clever and industrious guy Ian

I think you said you work on boats for a living didn't you? I seem to remember you saw my old car - it's in Malta again this week (see other Thread) .That keeps being 'fettled' by boat engineers/painters - they are doing a great job.

Thanks Guys

Rob - Yeah, I work on Superyachts for a living, saw your old Datsun last year, unfortunate I won't be in Malta this year, we will be in Turkey for an interior refit instead.

Gonna be a beast on the road! That Civic looks pretty quick from your videos too
It sure will be. Civic is quick, benefit of only weighing around 975kg, in the older videos its only got a 197hp 1.6, its now got a 2L with 250hp and buckets more torque and midrange. Power to weight ratio of 255hp per ton, an Aston DB9 is only 260.
