i put the fuel tank back on today, made sure all the wiring was correct, put fresh fuel in her and fired her up and had a problem from the get go.iw wouldnt start, just back fired all the time :( i narrowed it down to the firing order. now i downloaded the factory maual from xenon and it states the cylinder numbers are as follows, from the front of the engine ( closest to radiator right?) alternator side first.....criss crossing,

bulk head
5 6
3 4
1 2

radiator here

is this correct?

ive just been looking at th afm rebuild write up AFMrebuild

ummm..... mine looks nothing like either of them!? mine is completely round, a cylinder if you like, with a bracket bolted to the bottom? il will upload pics asap. also looking thrrough the middle of it, it has like a light bulb element going across the top, from lower left to lower right following the curve.

any idea's? could it be a cobra afm? i know people exchange the standard unit one for this one

ive took some pics of the afm, if anyone can shed some light on what its off, it would be very helpful, i have a feeling the cars not setup for this one!

also a pic of the new exhaust section, i went for the 3 inch diamiter :D looks rather good.

umm.... im tinkering with the idea of using a bike can!? i have one lying about.....i mean if it sounds sweet il grab a new scorpian bike can  i know some of you are probably thinking.....wft? but many people have used them. dont get me wrong, im not going to use it if it sucks ass. pic included.

one or two pics of the rubbing down on the arches, better pics. they still need work :)

Your AFM is the standard and correct Z31 one, the rebuild web page you posted was for the 280zx.

Can't beleive I missed this thread?!?!?!?!?

Great looking car.

I love my 31 just as much, and I have no history like yours, I just sorta bought it 3 years ago, and it's been my "bitch" ever since. :)

Tackle each problem as it presents itself, don't try to do too much at once. Take your time, and do it right, to the best of your ability.

Mr F will probably be able to get you a legit rotor arm if you need a new one, bang a post here

MJP Eastern Auto - ZClub.net

for any parts you may need.

Always been good to me, but maybe not so nice to my bank balance. :) (but if a part is needed, you gotta get it)

I look forward to seeing the progress of your project, and it's first MOT, Hope to see it out and about on the road very soon

thank you all for the confidence boost

Bad news peeps...........i started her up today, setting the distributor in the correct position etc, ans she fired up sweet as a nut, except there was a loud tapping from the left head (cylinder 1 side) :smash: :( so i turned it off straight away!! now i lined up the cams by hand and there out  the left one is out by 2 teeth. im not sure how the hell it happened but it has. the cam belt its self is in good shape, no cracks or corrosion. but, saying that,, it will need replacing and i plan on taking that dirty engine out,at the same time and doing a patial strip.it will also give me a chance to get her nice and clean ----> sparkling to be exact :D and painted too.

unfortunatly money is not on my side at the moment but im sure i will get it done, even if i have to sell my soul!

so this has turned into a full blown project now, which is kinda cool. after the mot i was planning on stripping the engine out anyway, just means that part has come early.

i will keep you all upto date as i do each part. its just a shame she wont be on the road this year :( but the way i look at it, better to be safe than very sorry

Better to do it now than to break down on a run. For some one who said go easy on me I'm new to this your a bloody monster, I'd never tackle getting the engine out on the drive so HATS off to ya matey. As for not on the road this year just think how sweet she will be in the new year when you will know every inch inside and out and the pride you'll feel giving her a good run in.

im happy happy happy :D my uncle had a few cam belts sitting around ( new ) one was an exact match. i set the pullys correctly, bolted her together and she runs sweeter than she ever has since ive known the car:) throttle response is instant with no hold back, misfiring or spluttering  even so, this belt is coming back of and the '' proper '' one will be bought. i have a feeling she already slipped a tooth on the cam pully/s before i had her, after starting her up again to see if my engine work had paided off, it must have slipped again :( in that respect i was very lucky not to have killed the valves and possibly a piston or 2. so yup, im happy with the engine, i let her warm up to hear the dump valve i installed that was on my old 200sx and i forgot how loud the thing was :D the baileys do give off a nice sound :)

i asked people to go easy because im a first time z owner, i dont know much about the z31 so i didnt want to ask a daft question and have fire spat at me as it were.lol as far as working on cars, engines etc, im not too bad, i dont know everything and i learn somthing new everytime. id rather do it myself and learn all i can for the future than pay someone silly amounts of cash to do the same thing. we have a problem in this area of garages ripping people off for un nessisery work, unfinished work etc.so if i do it, i know its done and to the highest standard i can ahcive  dont get me wrong, if there is somthing i know i cant do, i will seek professional help, but as it stands im pretty confident with what needs doing. i can do most things but id not want to attempt a head gasket change etc.but clutches, general part replacment, welding, bodywork........i think im pretty damn good for a un-quali :D

im really enjoying working on the z, brings a smile to my face everytime i open the door, lift the bonnet.......i could go on. lol i wish i had got her sooner but i have her now and have no plans on selling her for a long long time.id like to see her on the road in 20 more years..with me at the wheel :driving: :D

just a quick update....

exhaust is almost finished, just a little more welding to do, ive gone for a 3'' all the way through with a bog standard back box for now, (3'' in, 3 '' out) depending on how it sounds will determin anymore work on the exhaust.

so not that much left really, need to weld some plates in the passenger rear end, bit of sill work, then sort out the cosmetics, ie; filler, sanding etc and then the dreaded bushes that ALL need changing. i will be calling MF.F for these :)

the exhaust was finnished to day, went for a single back box.....sounds amazing!! nice and deep like i wanted. its made up of 3'' all the way through, box welded on and 3'' exit. hardest part was the mass of bends needed to go over the suspention arm etc, luckily i did it with minimal bends and its pretty much free flowing......... il make a vid and post the link soon. very proud indeed :)
