The 300ZX guy's name was Colin, so I assume it's the one you're asking about. When I got there we were the only Z/ZX peeps around (whoever told me to get there by 8.30 am at the latest BTW? - I spent an hour freezing my nads off before anything happened!). Blimey it was cold...
Anyway, I loved it. I think everyone has steamed away from a set of traffic lights at one time or another, but to do it properly down a track is an experience and a half. Great fun and a major adrenaline rush. I think the car should be able to run 15's in current spec (P90, 240 carbs, Nismo header), but for my first go I was very pleased not to mess it all up, and 16.1/86 isn't bad for a 25 year-old road car. Next time I'll leave the speaker box & amp at home for a start though! I'm also adding a racing clutch to my shopping list 'cos my stock one was very whiffy after two runs and I decided not to chance my luck and have it go bang. The second run was 16.3/80 because I gave her way too many revs and wheelspan for ages. I could have lifted off but to be honest I was having so much fun that I kept my right foot hard down! I'm told she launched straight and sounded and looked good which is encouraging too.
The day also changed my opinion as to speeds. Considering my 260 is quite nippy and I gave it my all, and she still only ran a 16.1, it made me appreciate the faster machinery more. The Peugeot GTi club were there in force with many cars running 14's so they must be quite exciting. Way behind our Z's and ZX's in the style stakes though ;-) As for the Skyline that did 10.2 at the Japanese Performance day, and Mr F's 280 that ran I think faster than that a few years ago - blimey! Something like that must be a REAL rush to drive. Maybe one day...
I can't wait until next time. The Z needs more power though, so engine mods will need to happen. Cam, head & NOS. Should be interesting! Oh yes, and a slimmer driver!
