Z Body Repairs ?

Yep, another rusty Z thread :D

I know you can't put a price on body repairs as each car can be different
But there must be an average when it comes to the same Z job ? I assume ??

So can someone who knows puts a rough price on this body work
Panels pre-supplied

Work req would be ..

2x "full" rear "outer" arch's replaced, inc "outer rear" sill section
1x lower door outer skin/repair panel fit replace

Just repair and replace panels, not paint !

Anyone care to share your thoughts would be good

The problem is, it involves moving the car.......

I just want an idea of costs for body work repairs done.
Not if it drives, has the right tyre pressures or oil filter type fitted

I can't weld and know nowt about proper body panel repair work
I just want to get any idea from those who do

btw, moving the car isn't an issue as it runs and drives !

I don't have a password passport to get out of this country

I could use asylum, but you've just knocked down the local hotel so no where to stay lol

Will get some pics over the weekend

The problem is, and why you can't accurately price these sort of jobs, is that nobody knows what condition the adjoining Bodywork is in, i.e. how far the Restorer will have to cut away the next sections of metal before the new bits can be fitted - and fitted correctly.

All Bodyshells are constructed from several individual pressings which overlap and were spot welded by the Factory - in the case of the early Z's, without any seam sealing to prevent the ingress of water & salt, etc., and hence the inner bits are impossible to structurally assess before cuttting away the outer sills, wheelarches, and so on. As you cannot weld the shiny new bits to the rusty old ones, the corrosion has to be cut away & re-made before fittting the new.

This does not include the stand-alone stuff such as Bonnets, Tailgates, etc, but even the front wings can't be fitted correctly if, for example, the forward end of the sills are rotten.

Sorry can' t be of help with a quotation, but I hope that this answers your question. It's a case of anyone who makes a firm quote for this kind of job is either going to lose money, or has to cut corners to make any profit - so someone loses out.....

I hear what you’re saying
I realise without been inspected first its impossible to quote
As you have no idea or what bodge is underneath and nor do I
If it helps Fourways restored the car some years back, so I’d hope its not so bad?
Maybe a few detailed pics of the infected areas will help for those in the know ?

No worries if not, but it all helps so not to be taken for a ride !

Wyn I would highly recommend Traction Garage it may be in France but will work out cheaper than you would think for a top job, give me a bell if you want more info ;).
