Wiper Motor Problem

Hi,

Benn having a problem with my wipers for awhile now, Whenever ide turn the wipers on, the motor would just buzz, then when ide turn the switch off the wipers would come on once.

I thought it was the motor, I had a spare one so changed that today and its the exact same, So then I put it down to the switch, I cleaned all the contacts but the motor is still just buzzing

Anyone any other idea's of what it could be?, is there a relay or anything that could be at fault?

Jay, are you sure its not the relay thats buzzing. its located in the rh footwell on the A post just under the dash. There are a couple of relays there but I can't remember which one is the wiper relay. Just listen or feel which one clickes when the wiper/washer is activated.

Its the motor thats buzzing Andrew, but both motors done the same thing, and I cleaned the contacts on the switch, so it must be that relay then, I'll have a look t the relays tomorrow and see if thats the problem,

It must be down to the relay, when I activate the washer the buzzing stops and the wipers work fine, but only when I keep the washer activated

Ok, So i changed the relay and its still the same!! Both the motor and relay are buzzing, Im confused now!

I would guess you have a wiring problem then. Do you have a wiring diagram and good eye sight? Should be simple enough to figure out if a little time consuming.

Im useless with wires, I'll have a quick look around tomorrow to see if I can see anything obvious.

On a mate of mine's old pug 405 he had a similar thing on one of the wipers. It was the serrated teeth that the blade arm snaps onto. For whatever reason, the teeth had sheared off and the motor just essentially span the cog inside the arm housing. When the motor slows down it's like the high revs dying down and the torque cutting in which is why the arm moves a little. He got replacement wiper 'gearing' from the scrappy. Sorted it. I'll put up a pic of what I mean if I'm not being clear enough.

I'll have a look at the wiring diagram tomorrow eve after work and see if I can give you some advice on what to look for and what to test. Do you have a multimeter or tester?

Just so i know, your car has intermittent wipers doesn't it. Mine does but its a late 260Z (really a 280Z in disguise).

Yeah mine has the intermittent wipers, I also have a multimeter but have never used it and not sure how to

I opened up the motor to check the plastic teethed wheel and all that is ok.

Cool. It was brass on my mates which is why it was weird that it sheared. Here is a pic of the bit I mean (just in case my description makes me out to be a div!)

The one on my car is a large white plastic toothed wheel which is connected to a shaft which is connected to the wiper arms, The shaft was pretty dirty so I took it out and cleaned everything up while I was at it and oiled up the wiper arms.

Just need to find the problem now

Hi Jay ! Try checking resistance, thats the ohms position on the meter, between the pos and earth positions on the drive motor. Im thinking you have a prob with the motor mate  There should be LOTS of resistance showing on your meter. If this is the case then try the same with the switch as well :) Hope this helps !

Jay, two points:

When I turn my intermittent wipers off they operate once - I THOUGHT that was normal (but strange:unsure:)

Secondly - perhaps you have two duff motors?

could well have 2 bad motors. Im going to call into a scrap yard on the way home and see if i can find a civic motor they seem to work pretty well with a relax

That is normal, they operate once more so that the wipers can park in a slightly lower position than during normal operation.

If you're going for a Honda motor make sure you get the right one. You need to make sure the mounting holes configuration and wiper arm attachment will fit. I posted a picture on a post somewhere ( can't remember which one). Mine came off an Accord which works better than the Civic, 1993 I think. Found it quicker than I thought !

hi andrew yes i got your pm. Im using my phone at the minute so couldn't reply to it. Ill check all that wiring when i get home. I can get a honda motor for 20 euro so might as well do that while am at it. the honda motors come with 3 holes and 4 holds for the bracket. I need the 3 hole motor and a relay. Its supposed to work well
