What is THE Z32

Hey all,

Just wondering what THE Z32 model is to have performance wise? Or maybe which has the nicest interior? You know what is THE model to have (no biased opinions s.v.p)

Been waiting so long for a 240 I may just sell my 306 to my bro and get a Z32 while I'm waiting. And no I don't expect to afford/insure the quickest Z32

Cheers

THE Z32 performance wise would be a manual TT that's been boosted to outlandish HP outputs.
A more sensible buy would be a 2 seater or 2+2 stock Twin Turbo car preferably (imho) with a manual gearbox.
If you want a reliable everyday car then the normally aspirated cars are a great buy and still have 230bhp as standard. One of these in the lighter 2 seat body with a manual gearbox would be a sensible choice.
On the TT cars most of the problems seem to come from the auto gearboxes, especially on the import cars and quite a few people have switched their cars over to a manual box
Beware though, as there are a lot of scruffy cars out there now, that have had little of the correct maintenance required!

Now all I need is a wider driveway

Interior-wise, the series 2 cars have a much improved feel having lost the awful tweed cloth effect and replaced it with Alcantara (mock suede).
Turbo cars will always have the edge on performance (and maintenance costs if anything goes wrong), but a lightly tuned SWB NA with manual box is about as quick as a stock, average TT (that should stir up some protest). Due to the steeper gearing, they are quicker over the first 60ft than many highly tuned TTs (got the dragstrip tickets to prove that - to be fair most tuned TTs can't move from a standstill at their maximum potential due to power overcoming available traction and traction control only slows them down). The gearing gives good response on the road in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but kills 5th which has a taller gear to maintain sensible cruising rpm. The SWB handling is to my preference and you lose the dreadful HICAS rear wheel steering, although original road tests awarded the TT a marginally higher turning g-force rating. My own SWB is nicer to drive than any 2+2 TT that I have ever experienced......possible sale early next year if you are interested?

Hi,

Very interesting, the only thing the N/A doesn't do for me is it lacks the dump valve potential. I know some of you will jeer at the dump valve but I've always wanted one and even if I only kept it on for a week it would make me a happy bunny

Gotta sell my 306 first, its worth about £2k and has £3k of bits on it so I need to break it and return it to standard to get any money back so that'll probably be next summer

Nice looking at them tho

Russ,

You may be surprised to find that the NA Z32 is generally more expensive to insure than a UK TT would be. This is due to NAs being available only as imports; since they were never sold here. So, it may be that if you can hang on to find a decent UK TT - you'll find you can insure the one with the best performance, and it's pretty impressive, even before modifications!

IMO, you should definitely hold out for a manual. I've had both variants, but despite what anyone says about autos being quicker in certain speed ranges, overall it's just not true (sorry guys).

BTW, Mike, could I have seen your NA 2-seater in Sidcup this lunchtime? Certainly looked familiar!

John.

Hi,

That is interesting about the NA insurance, kinda reassuring in a strange way. I get really good insurance deals for my age anyway so hopefully it won't scare me too much. I would like an auto but I only think that when Bournemouth is busy

Thanks guys

Well spotted John - the car is on loan to a friend at present and I'm missing it badly. The van is no substitute....

Given the current state of my car - looks like I might need to put my name down on the "can-I-borrow-Mike's-300" list!

Reading this thread makes me really keen to fork out the money and pick up my 92 300ZX SWB NA from the paintshop real soon. Ooooooh EM3 lavly lavly!!!

Back in 99 I wasn't sure the NA SWB was the right choice but after some good advice, diligent maintenance, sensible upgrades, a makeover and reading this I'm a happy Z'r.

Roll on summer this year I'm sooooo looking forward to providing ear and neck ache to the masses.

Phew!

Hello Mate,

The turbo is the way to go for performance and more niggles, but you won't get one without the other!!

A Uk manual is about the most desirable model as you can get classic car insurance on it, which means you can mod to your hearts content for a small premium!

I think most people agree that the car reaches a nice level of performance when you do the exhaust, filter, chip and boost upgrade, following these you will probably need a clutch upgrade!!

Welcome Back Mike.... (where you been? here and on the "other" side?)

And to think, what a way to get going again with the good old colour debate!! LOL

I think you'll find that silver is for hairdressers and that a re-spray to black will meet with the performance upgrade you desire!

Wotcher john-boy - basically family and business stuff so just a tad overloaded for a while. But back to trying to get a life now!

All the haidressers round these parts seem to run to Audi TTs or those diddy Mercs (usually yellow.) It is a known fact that silver Zeds are driven by cooler people of higher intellijense than those poor deluded fules who paint their motors with black Hammerite.

I must agree with John-Boy, Michael Knights car kit is still obviously the fastest vehicle on land and that was black. Coincendence I think not.

Ok someone said you could get classic insurance on a 300zx??? I could maybe afford to get one come June 2004 when I'm 21. Could I drive both my cars on classic policies do you think when I get old enough?? Sounds like a great plan and I was gonna get an Alfa 156 but 300zx would be really nice.

Oh more good news on my 240z front, as of June I have a weekend job at the local car restoration bodyshop and they are really very good at what they do

Allow me to doth my cap to Russ ...

Such discerning taste for one so young .. an example to the rest of us.

I'm Sorry, though, Mike - it's definitely Silver cars for hairdressers ... as you may remember at the Lakeside meet in the "diddy" SILVER merc of my missus I very much resembled your remarks ... Amazingly, I felt an almost irripressible urge to ask everyone in attendace if they were going anywhere nice on their holidays .... I rest my case

I'd probably agree that Silver cars are for thinkers .... the inherent torpor that they bring with them gives you guys a little more time to contemplate things during any given journey!
