Valve clearances

I am trying to adjust the valve clearances on an engine that has done 1.000 miles since reconditioning. However I can't move the rocker pivot locknuts by normal force. I am very wary of applying extra leverage as I am not sure which way they are threaded and i certainly don't want to sheer the bolts.

I am more than averagely incompetent in matters mechanical and there may be a knack that escapes me.

Any advice?

If we are talking the L series Engine ( 240Z/260Z/280ZX) here -
Use a 17 mm open ended spanner - tap it with a hammer to loosen the locknut - it is normal thread ( i.e.anticlockwise to undo ), then a 14mm ring spanner to adjust clearances.
When done, give the locknuts a little tap on the spanner end to make sure they don't come undone in future.
