triple carb or injection?

HOUSEQUAKE

Well-Known Forum User
It's that time of year when I can become dis-chuffed with a '79 car.

I'm talking about starting/stalling warming up etc.

I had thought that putting on the injection gear for the 280zx would alleviate this?

Would a triple carb setup be any better than injection or twins?

Advice please

Get a decent electronic ignition, clean the rotor cap, and fit new leads and plugs. Check your timing. What carbs are you running now? (service them if you haven't already). Get the basics right and you'll probably cure three quarters of your problems.

But if you've got flat-top 260 carbs ignore all that, chuck them in a canal and buy some 240Z roundtop jobbies, THEN go to paragraph one above :)

a Ha...

First job I did when I got the car was to put on a 280zx dizzie and coil, new plugs, leads etc.

Only thing I haven't done is change the air filters on my twin 1.75" SU carbs (thanks for info on identifying these guys), because I've been in 2 minds whether to proceed with FI ( which has always appealed to me) or to stay retro and go triple carbs BUT...I want it to behave better on cold mornings :(

Im sure you can get them set up pukka, but imo you won't like triples in your case :)
The cost alone for a set would put most peeps off, let alone setting them up in the snow lol  :D

Put 280 Injection on & be different I did on my 260 2+2, I put a Janspeed & K+N on & ported the head & it was quick in relation to how it was as standard.

Would be cheaper setting the carbs up proper, even if it is a d.i.y job
Find out what they came from and buy the owners manual for them
Atlest that will give you a good starting point of what to adjust
Then when it's all up n running go buy a set of webers n start over again :D

Carbs....£1000 ish.. manifold.....£250 ish...plus air box..£200 plus cold air ...£65 ish plus rolling road and regular set up £250 per year.Mine runs fine in the cold, warms up ok, no stutter or poor idle. hot day it was fine too although ran faster on idle.

Injection £3K ish.... up side more power, better fuelling. Down side, upon re-sale some ppl would be afraid of buying a hotch potch job so make sure it's done right and there should be a wiring diagram supplied with the car. I woul;d be checking things like joint connections on the wiring as that would tell me if the electrician cared or not. oh and it looks cheap..n nasty .

hmmm...

Thanks guys.

As always, enuff information for me to remain... completely indecisive

(Shuffles off to look for piggy bank)

Errr excuse me, When I fitted 280 inj in '93 it cost £200 from Sports Salvage at Southport (but he's retired now) + coil & dizzy which I would have fitted anyway + K&N & Janspeed which it would have had anyway. The standard carbs wanted replacing so 200 quid was a bargain. Theres only 3 wires to connect 1 to ign, 1 to earth & 1 to the dizzy & it didn't look cheap & nasty, the ECU fitted up the left hand side footwell so didn't look out of place. Have you seen Phil Millers yellow 260 2+2 G-nose left hand drive? That looks all clean & polished a bit like yours, mine was let down by being zebarted from new.

What ever you do don't go inj as that is/ looks rank imo
Unless you are going T/Bodies mind :D
Stick with the carbs n get them set up right!
In fact why not tell me who's selling the webers (if you find a set) n I'll px my nice set of 2" SU's n opened out manifold ;)
Jubly

Erm 2.8 injection? why go back to the ark? if you are going the injection route the TB's have to be the way to go as it is fully programable, about 3K is a guidline only. Carbs are from the ark,, but that is the look I like, I see no point in replacing carbs with an old k or j jetronic type set up and fannying around with a system that is not in any way tuneable for the modern demans we require from an injection system. I would view that system of one that places tripple 48's on a standard engine in the hope that there will be a small gain, we just have to search for it......no point what so ever. Oh by the way using bold typing or caps is considered as shouting.;)

I think you could use a standard NA fuel injection manifold off a 280zx with good results, use a larger throttle body, decent intake pipe and air filter. With the fuel and ignition mapped, decent cam, some mild headwork and a free flowing exhaust you could get some impressive power. It also looks nice and clean if you cut off all the unused pipe fittings. IMO.

like this one.

Then at a later date you could so easily add a nice turbo, run 7psi boost and leave all the slow NA guys standing :D:D

It was done in bold to get my message across.

It all depends on what you can afford & at the time 280 inj was more readily available than 240 carbs & it was different & the only other I've seen is Phil Millers & it was better than the standard 260 carbs.
We can't all afford to spend the sort of money Skiddell is spending.
As a matter of interest grolls what is yours running on?

No not mine, I saw it on a 240 on hybridZ. 7 psi would work really well for a 260 engine, it could take more, I think the 260 has the same CR as my engine 8.35:1 and I had mine set at 14 for a while....I dropped it back down to 10 until I fit my LSD, it was too much power for 1 wheel drive :)
I'd like to see how your T turbo setup performs....hope to see you at Combe one day!

Here is my manifold, It's from a NA 280zx, I just blanked off the unused holes. When I first started to map my car I drove it with the turbo disconnected so really it drove as a standard NA injected car. It was silky smooth and very responsive.

Nice throttle body! What size injectors do you run Simon?
Mine are 550cc from RC Engineering in the US.
Mark.

Still trying to find my picture cd from photo shoot. When I do, I will post some pics of setup and car.
Just got a Gt25r roller bearing turbo for the Cherry, should be much more interesting!

Got my injectors from Five O in the States. 650cc and they run at about 54% duty cycle when WOT in 4th which gives a rough HP figure of 340, not bad for an old motor :)
