Carb balancing/tuning

Hey guys,
I took my car recently for MOT but they said its failing on

emissions due to the throttle bodies been out of balance and they need tuning. Do any of you know either roughly how to tune them as ive never done this sort of thing before so not sure what im looking for i know its screws but thats about it! It doesnt have to be brilliant but just so it can get through the mot. I would take them to be properly done but because of the bad setup its struggling and i dont want to take it on a longer journey. Thanks guys

Craig

What year is the car as emmisions doesnt apply until the late 70's

Otherwise

Use a synchrometer (snail) redily available on the bay of E

By the way when did you put put TB's on ???? what ECU are you using

unfortunately this is a late 70's its a 78' so its right in there for emissions lol. Yeah ive done a little research and came across them, but didnt have a clue how to start to use one. Do you know the basic principal behind how to use them? and it came with them, i think its all just the standard 'SU' carbs setup i believe its called minus my k&n filter additions.

Check your mot station is doing a pre 83' emissions check. They introduced the emissions test in 75 I think but decreased the carbon monoxide levels in 83'. Might be worth checking but I may be wrong....

Craig - slightly confused here - is the 260Z on the standard 240Z Carbs as fitted when you bought it, or is it on Throttle bodies as per modern Fuel Injection stuff ?

One of us is barking up the wrong tree !

I have a 77 car and the emission test is for pre 83 which is pretty relaxed and if the car is running anywhere near normal will pass ok. It sounds like it must be running well rich just turn up the carbs a quarter turn each and it should be ok. Do you have the CO figures as they should supply them to you.

Its exactly how i bought it from yourself pal(standard 240z carbs). except instead of the standard air filter box it now has individual k&n filters on it.

Mr.G:
They said throttle bodies at the garage ive just been using that. but yeah your right its just carbs.

I would go back and ask their advice, mentioning the pre 83' test and ask if you can just adjust the jet position on the bottom of the su's. Try and be diplomatic to avoid ******* them off. Some people don't like being told they're doing it all wrong.

what was the age of the mot inspector as they dont have to be mechanics and if young enough wouldn't know what a carb was

not sure on age tel240z, i just dropped it off and picked it up but they all did look pretty youngish though. Anyway so i had a guy come take a look today and he said they are quite worn so i could do with a jet, needle and valve assembly replacement. Does anyone know of anything like this for the SU carbs that i can order or buy off a member?

It sounds like they have not got a clue what there talking about. I wouldn't let them touch the car.
I would right off your £40 and take it some where that MOT older cars on a regular basis.

Respectfully I would also learn what your car has (and has not) so you are better positioned to spot idiots

Cars, Houses, Wives, Girlfriends, Friends, Clothes, Hairstyles.....you name it:eek:

I know its a pain but before I got my car, I read every page of this forum and learnt what went where and who knows what, it will stand you in good stead:thumbs:
