Temperature gauge position

Dear Z heads,

My 260's temp gauge was always showing less than a quarter sweep. So I shorted the engine bay connector and it swept all the way.

I just replaced the sender unit and it sits just under half way. The way I figure it is that it's sitting at 180F which is about 85C.

My question is, is that where it's supposed to be? I've read on some forums that it should be three quarters across which sounds hot to me. Any thoughts ?

Thanks in advance!

Ali

Mine sits just very slightly to the right of the letter F on the gauge. Hope that helps. It always used to sit bang in the middle but when I put in a new sender, that has where it has now moved to.

looks ok to me,have you tried a new thermostat, that might make it sit some where else on the gauge but it looks right,

Thanks chaps, this is very useful info indeed.

I suppose the people commenting in the forums I was reading were based in Australia or US where it is probably considerably warmer than the 9deg C of the afternoon I was testing mine!! ;) So it's quite conceivable that they run three quarters across as their norm.

Status- I didn't want to mess with the thermostat until I had confidence in the temp gauge first. But suffice it to say that the rad heats up as expected when warming up, so for now I assume the thermostat is behaving.

I did have a problem with a late-opening thermostat at one point. So replaced it with a new one. Now it sometimes climbs to three quarters as the car first warms up, then it swiftly drops to just right of centre.

Riddler, that's really interesting. I'll watch it like a hawk next time warming up.

My next experiment is to suspend the thermostat in a pan of water on the stove, then use the infrared baby's temperature gauge to measure the temp at which it opens. I'm certain it will please my wife no end! ;)

BTW do you guys know where the best place is for sourcing a thermostat housing gasket?
