Strong smell of petrol

Hi - this may be a usual thing - but at £25 a gallon, I think any smell of petrol is unwelcome.

1. When I start my ZX T/T 55k 1994 engine up I get quite a pungent smell of fuel not only whilst warming - but sometimes for a while after driving.

Haven't checked anything yet as I wonder if this is normal? Didn't seem to notice it before though. Only owned it since October 2007.

Only work that's been done is fitting an Apexi induction kit and adjusting the throttle idle control box as it was not ticking over properly.

2. My windscreen was frosted over completely the other morning, so I started the Zed and let it warm up with the Demist screen on and the fan on full blast at highest temp setting. Only trouble was - not a hint of air warm or cold, coming from the windscreen vents. Nothing worked no matter what settings I chose. The screen only defrosted when the whole car was glowing like the nose-cone of the Space Shuttle on re-entry!! any thoughts?

many thanks Chris

ps will post pics of the car if anyone's interested.

Fuel leaks on the top of the plenum are common. check all connections. Dont forget the one that goes under the plenum. If still leaks then replace all the flexible lines with new braided Stainless steel ones. All Z32s will smell a bit rich this cold weather as the ecu sets it high on start up.
no good asking me about heater controls I have ownded several Z32s since 2004 and still not fathomed out how it all works. No doubt someone else will be along soon to sort that for you.

Cheaper than beer

We alll go to the pub and moan about paying £4.5 per gallon, whilst drinking beer at £20+ per gallon. that can't be right

If I use Lager instead of Unleaded will that solve the problem of smelly petrol??

Yes indeed, but your car will smell of lager instead and probably won't start :D

Probably safer to light a fag in a car that smells of lager though. Pretty soon that'll be the only place you'll be allowed to :)

Fitted 2 new Oxy sensors today - leaving overnight with battery off so the ECU will lose it's memory?? Hope it's not an urban myth. I'm scared in case the car forgets who it is tomorrow morning!!

Anyhoo, I'll let you know if there's any difference to the soot that's making the zorst and rear bumper look like George Clooney's 4 o'clock shadow.......

Found the leak. It was the small inline fuel filter with a couple of hoses that were loose. Tightened them up and it stopped pouring out. Now I miss the smell so much I've just bought an Unleaded Fuel Air Freshener for the cockpit............

BTW - is there anything that is accessible on the 300zx? I'll have to employ a Japanese servant just so he can get his hinds into the engine bay for me.

Hope the fuel economy gets a tad better with new sensors and stopped leaks.

Since fitting the new Oxy sensors I am pretty sure the fuel economy has improved will let you know on a my next long run i.e. to the filling station.......

Well done finding your leak:D

And yup there's so much under the hood of a zed a otherwise simple job often results in taking bits out left right and centre before you can get to the job in hand:(

But if you're not worried about the time it all takes you'll do fine even this woman does most of her own work on her Zed. hee heee often found up to her armpits it zed bits:eek:
