Hi guys.

I figured as Im probably going to be in and out of here a LOT once I really get started on this, that I'd make a thread for talking about it.

So, to start it off, heres a couple of links to some pictures:

The car (bad quality pics generally) After I bought her:

Photos of the RHS now that I've begun stripping stuff off (black stuff is hammerite, since I have no garage):

Comments, suggestions, etc. all welcome.

Holy smokes. That's a lot of rust. I've got a nasty feeling you're gonna be chasing that around the car for the duration. Still, if it's a project your after then go for it. I'd like to say there's light at the end of tunnel... Good luck!

:S30: iv welded up some rough Zs in my time but i think even i would give it a miss, you should get in touch with mike and mjp and buy his wide arch zx the shell is mint iv looked if i didnt have a 260 on the go i would deff have it. look in the for sale,s

but its all down to you in the end but it looks like a long job to sort it all out, dont want to seem down on it but having done it a few times i would not like to do it again

Hey guys :) thanks for the support, hehe.

I know its going to be a lot of work but there are some good points

1) I'll know a lot more about welding / metalwork when I'm done.

2) I'll know ever square inch of the car

3) It'll be *mine* :)

Next job is to dismantle the spare doors from my daihatsu, for two reasons - 1 because I want to take the handles off (and put them on my daihatsu) and 2 because I need the shed pace for the L28 motor and all the insides of the Datsun ;-)

Might keep the doorskins as scrap metal. I guess I should buy a nibbler...

Wo BRO!!!!!!! I feel the Love and wish you all the best!!!! I actually thought mine was bad!!! I think Martin might be right,ya know. But even with huge great holes everywhere, and negs from all and sundry.....Mine looks the Nuts again...So..GO FOR IT!!!!! Best of Luck, Mate

And you're absolutely right - your Z _does_ look the nuts - beautiful :)

I got the tool for cutting out windscreens today. now I need to clear the shed so I have somewhere safe to put it.

Since Im intending to replace 99% of the scuttle panel Im now _hoping_ that its so rotten that I wont need to cut the windscreen bond much on the bottom. the top and sides look very accessible for this tool, but the bottom less so. All I need to d now is ensure I dont cut into those lovely never-before-rotted A-pillars.

BTW, the side where I test applied hammerite and flatted / polished it has taken a nice shine thats hard to scratch, so I learned something else from this. Im going to be respraying my daihatsu using hammerite I think. if I put some wax on top of it it'll look great.

The 280zx is going to be finished in black pearl, so I cant use hammerite for it (they dont make a clearcoat, and nothing much will stay stuck to hammerite once it hardens).

(and I'm keeping the chrome chrome :) - speaking of which has anyone ever got the stainless panel from behind the door chromed? I'm considering doing this, and would like to see an example if poss.)

Can I suggest you give the car a facelift conversion. Ie fit the later colour coded wrap around bumpers and the later pinstrip rear lights. I think they look much better. I think Jez300 (now 280) has the later car if you want to see pictures.

Thats hardly going to help the provenance/authenticity of an already rare Mk1 2seater 280ZX. and when you consider the fact that there were no Mk2 2seaters sold in the UK it is a pointless exercise to make it appear so. IMO of course.;)

well Im going to have to do _something_ about the front end as the plastic bumper is bent or warped or something (fouls the bonnet).

Im thinking I'll remove it all, put some reenforcements in and make a replica of the current shape (which I like) out of fibreglass, perhaps lose a couple of the harder edges, but basically keep the look.
