The latest (2001) figures from the SMMT show that 280ZX numbers registered on the road for this period have taken a nosedive yet again:

280ZX manual : 75
280ZX auto : 39
280ZX targa manual : 72
280ZX targa auto : 147

This represents a drop of 381 cars overall from the last published figures.

Did you know that an anagram of "Snooze alarms" is "Alas! No more Zs." Wake up and save the marque!!!!!

I've just looked at the rest of the site and realised that's it, all the 280zx's. Not many at all. ouch. I'll have to buy another one... to do my bit.

I suppose I had better restore my latest aquisition instead of chopping it up like the others. What is it? its another 1978 manual Fairlady 280Z 2+2 just like my former one, now owned by Perry.
It was imported from New Zealand in the late 90s. Chassis number 204. Is this the oldest 280 in Britain? or the World???

At this rate it'll be the only 280ZX in the world.

Yes, Perry, those are the figures for the TOTAL UK population and I guess the bottom is hanging out of many of those.....

I have a 2 seater here at the moment - belongs to Ken at ZXS. He is going to break it - top side is almost presentable, usual welding nightmare underneath. Anyone want to make a sensible offer to save it? Red, tan interior, manual, no sun-roof, some new parts fitted already. Was in use until vicious MOT man yellow chalked it all over.

This should be like the bus driver with the cuddly kittens in his bag - "I'm going to drown 'em at the end of my shift, mate....."

If these are the figures for 2001 what has happened since then? As we are now in 2003. The total for 2001 of ALL 280Zxs is 333. How many now are actually "on the road" or nearly there?? Less than 300 Time for a club survey?

I'd love to save that 2 seater, I'd love a 2 seater as well as the fairlady (2+2), and a uk spec car too, and i do now have a 'spare' garage ........but i think my girlfriend would kill me. Honestly.

Just out of interest, what would you estimate the underneath to cost to fix? i mean just how bad is it? I don't imagine it's a job for a novice welder.

Perry

pmac- given the figures, i'd say keep the fairlady if you can. even though we've talked about this and you sold me yours so you'd have more time on your hands for the 240 etc. Maybe it could be a slow burner... i'd like to compare and see what it's like. does it still have all the factory goodies on it? I am a bit disappointed mine's not the oldest we know of now though. You do have an engine for it, unless I win or find some money and persuade you otherwise....

Here's my comments from last October....

I know it's been a while but just registered to the site!!

I have a 280zx 2+2 Targa Y reg (MGN 7Y). Had it about 6 years. It's currently on a SORN and regretably has been for the last 4 years. Whilst I had 2 fantastic years driving it I moved up north started a family and found I used it less and less until it became uneconomical to run so laid it up.

I love the car but with no garage and little protection mother nature has taken it's toll. I'd dearly love to do it up and have it back working and talk about it as if it was my third 'baby'. But I'm not mechanically minded and wouldn't know where to start.

My point is this... I like many probably have 280 ZX's and have them because we like/love the car. But we either simply don't have the time, money or perhaps the where withall to repair them once they start deteriating. Couple this with the cost of restoration out weighing any value for the car (which is something I'd have to justify to my family who don't have the same passion for the car) and I can see why the numbers are dropping. You just have to look at the 'for sale' site to see.

I really would like to keep the car and have it running again but wouldn't know where to start and can't commit my time to it. My other option is topay someone to do the work but again, it's justifying the cost.

Any ideas for keeing another 280zx from the graveyard?

Still in the same boat and alas the poor girl is getting worse. Now looks like I'll have to part with it for scraps as we are having an extension built & have nowhere to store it and still no time to do it up.

I just can't justify the cost, it would almost be like building it from scratch.

There are many people in the club who have spent well in excess of what their car is worth, but most of them dont want or need to justify it to anyone. Its just a personal choice, and only you can make that choice. Professional restoration is the only option for many members and is never a cheap one.
Discuss it with your family and follow your heart! (or if your wallet rules your heart then follow your wallet). But do it now as leaving any car of this age outside in an unprotected state will mean that very soon you wont have a choice, it will be a scrapper.
And then that's the stage when I appear on your drive with a trailer and a 9" cutting disc!!! Its all very sad but its what happens. Ive got rid of six in the past 4 years and theres another one in my drive just waiting for some new cutting discs to arrive!

I know the feeling but if some one can answer my post on fog lights then miy 280zx will get through its MOT and get back on the road. I suppose I could remove the lights but then it would not be as it is supposed to be. So please answer and help me!

280Zx wiring is a mystery to me. More relays than the olympic games. In the absence of any better suggestions why dont you re wire them from the fuse box(spare terminal??) or take a live feed from the battery through an inline fuse and a new little swith fitted somewhere. Or just take them off, get the bloody ticket and put them back on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know its not kosher but so what. Most important thing is to get the beast out of the garage and onto the road, before summer goes.
Bring it to Billing. Some clever sod will have the right answer.
