Sharing of V5 number

Bet he’s a scammer tbh - not even coming back for deposit would be an interesting issue tho.. hopefully he didn’t pay via PayPal that he can open a dispute via?

I think your mate did well there. I guess he was still down on a bank fee for a bounced cheque, but could have been a heck of a lot worse.

I can't think of a way out of the mess for the person I know. One option would be to report the car stolen (I think the fines now exceed the cost of the car so it is 'sort of' stolen). But it sounds dodgy to effectively be lying to the Police.
He can certainly call/write to DVLA to tell them he's (now) no longer the registered keeper. That'll prevent any more charges piling up. If he has evidence/witnesses for when he sold the car, they may accept that as the date of transfer.

You’re right JB - when my Mr.2 was written off by the insurance company, they insisted I didn’t fill in the V5 and soon after, I started getting speeding and parking notices!!! As you suggested, I wrote to the DVLA and explained what had happened which fixed it.

It'll be tricky for him as you're technically not covered to buy cars with PayPal - not that he has to tell the truth, of course

That’s a very good point!
I still find it entirely bizarre that someone would agree to buy (and pay a deposit on) a car of this value that they’d never even been to see in person… and apparently they lived within 100 miles of its location!

I have a feeling this was a "targeted" thing and that he took a chance.

I have had similar to this once before and the "buyer" eventually contacted his bank and said it was an unauthorized purchase and PayPal refunded his money (and I had no say/appeal) - putting my PayPal into negative balance (as I had spent some of it). A right PITA
