S*dding Intermittent starting problem

Well I had this last year - turn key = fek all!

Believed it to be starter motor and it worked after fitting a re-conned one (Thanks Moggy) but problem persisted.

Car would start after maybe a few turns of the key but not always on the first go.

Then had to put in a new battery and it seemed to cure all the probs...until now.

Back to same old routine, last night it wouldn't go at all. Cleaned all connections, checked plugs etc nothing.

Went this morning on 2nd go.

WHAT IS IT???

Is the engine turning over but not firing or not cranking at all just to narrow down the problem?

If it is not cranking over, it might be the ignition switch on the back of the steering lock.
Have known these to come loose with use, as they are only held on by a small philips screw!

The electrical bit on the back of the ignition switch can fail and is available separately and also replaceable without dismounting the whole assembly. Usually the sprung bit to make starting contact that fails...

Thanks guys.

It isn't turning over at all when it's acting up, just a click noise so what you've suggested may be right.

Started up first time this morning, then spluttered and died, then took about 30 turns on the key before any 'contact' was made

Had it at a mechanic who simply said 'It's working at the minute so I can't diagnose the fault'

If the "click" is down at the starter motor it may be that the solenoid contacts are failing.

What a bunch of brainy Z enthusiasts

You were all right, auto sparky he say ignition switch!

10 points to you all and thanks again for replies.
