removing the bonnet

Can I undo the hinge bolts when the bonnet is closed or does it have to be open? In other words, will the sprung hinge want to always push into the open position?

best to do it open as you said, its spring loaded !!!!!!!!!!

ah ******, I thought that might be the case. Cheers, time to recruit my unwitting housemates!

Its a bit of an interesting question, I was kind of under the impression that the spring bars were not loaded when the hinges are shut. The only other thing to consider is to remove the spring bars before you take the bonnet off, then is doesn't matter.

This is what I did in the end, in case anyone else needs to get the bonnet off by themselves (yeah, I know it took me 3 months to get around to doing it!)

1. remove grill.
2. open bonnet and prop it open (this is important!)
3. lever the torsion bars off the hinges with a big ass screwdriver and lots of cussing.
4. remove torsion bars.
5. unscrew rear-most bolt on each hinge assembly (if you are looking to remove the hinges from the body as well as the bonnet).
6. close the bonnet so it is latched on the first click.
7. unscrew bolts holding bonnet to hinges (2 either side)
8. unlatch bonnet and remove.
9. unscrew two front-most bolts on each hinge assembly.
10. remove hinges.
