Rear light panel plastic rivets

Could someone with a 240z, and someone with a 260z or 280z please measure the thickness of the pin part of the plastic rivets that attach the rear light panels to the car?

MSA/Zstore say that the 240z uses smaller ones, and that the 260 and 280z use the same diameter rivets as used on the interior. However, I've tried to use the interior rivets I've got in the rear light panels, and they don't fit without really hammering them down. And now I need to remove them, and can't without breaking them.

So just wondering if the ones for the 240z are going to be a better bet, or whether they'd be way too small?

MSA's description of the rivets for the 240:

The 240Z rear panel ones are significantly smaller than the interior rivets - like half the size. I suspect they'd be way too small if the 280Z ones are more on a par with the interior rivets. You definitely don't want them to be loose and lose a rear panel on the go!

You can buy plastic trim rivets of the same design in a range of different sizes off eBay btw. I've got some I bought as a test that were for a BMW. You could explore the options out there if the interior type ones are a bit too tight.

Just to check - the interior rivets you've tried are the correct type with the pin through the middle that you press down to lock once in place? That pin can be pushed all the way through to release.

Those are the ones, thanks Rich. They fit, just a bit too tightly for my liking.

That's a good idea.. I might just try a load of eBay ones! Cheers

This is the kind of thing:

There are a few different size variations you can find if you look hard enough, and various sellers. The challenge is wading through all the other types of trim rivets that come up when searching. Then matching the dimensions of the Z ones.

Search with terms like "plastic trim wheel arch liner rivet"

Do you know if they're the tiny ones Rich mentioned or the larger, later ones? If you end up finding them, could you possibly measure the pin diameter please? Cheers!

I emailed Florian at Z-services.eu, as he sells both the small ones: https://www.z-services.eu/en/interior-panels/849-tail-light-plastic-rivet-240z-260z-280z.html and the larger (also for interior) ones: https://www.z-services.eu/en/interi...vet-240z-260z-280z.html#/185-clip_color-black

"The 008490 : Pin diam 4.5mm / Width 8mm / Length 7mm

The 006881 : Pin diam 5mm / Width 14mm / Length 14mm

On a 240Z, you need only the smallest. For a 260Z/280Z, you should need
both (008490 x2 + 006881 x6)"

The x2 of the smallest ones (8490) I assume are for the number plate holder? So he's saying the larger ones are what you should use on top of the rear light panels. I guess the ones I've got are the right ones, just a very tight fit!

I was one rivet down on a 280Z back panel so yesterday I did a bit of digging on the internet and found a firm called Components Direct that did samples....................... so I ordered a sample of everything in black! they challenged why and I told them I fix Datsuns and they said OK. Today! I got the samples, impressive service.

here are pics of the one I used, first pic is a standard rivet, second one is the one I ordered, screenshot is the website and order code.

Nice one! So is that a minimum order of 100?
