RBDETT powered 280ZX ?

Is it possible ? Sure, anything is at a cost but to aim for 250-300 bhp in a 280ZX, one either goes for oodles of turbo techniques on an L28, a V8 or an RBDETT (or a DJR stroker 3.1/Kiddell brew) !

The first, I've dropped immediately as too expensive per bhp, the second is looking to be the option but before decisions are made and orders placed, what are the costs per bhp of slipping an RBDETT inside, ie, what is involved as extra parts/work ?

This has been done in Japan - I have a DVD with a little bit of one example on it. Also seen it in Japanese mags with underside pics showing the full FWD implementation! But, as per a quote from an Australian who did the full FWD build with RB26DETT into a Z - "...engine and drivetrain $5000 to buy, $15,000 to install....".

No, I'm talking RWD and so upon reflection, probably the 2.5 litre single turbo version (cheaper ?) !

Just buy the engine and bolt it in!

And modify a suitable propshaft...

And a bit of electrical work here and there....

There was a RB30DETT engined 260 in Retro cars from Aus a month or two back. That didn't look such a nightmare and made 500 ponies :)

I know I have other things to be doing but I'm still grappling with the RB26 vs SBC debate, both lovely, hard to chose.

Sorry for this for being pretty long as I don't want this to be a repost, I did a thread there as I have just discovered this thread. After discovering it in an ad in January 2006 issue of Nostalgic Hero found 2 '83 model S130 with a RB26DETT, one with 750ps and another for sale at the price of an German Mini Cooper

Details in Japanese here
Here is the 750ps model which says P.O.A

It depends on what RB you use; the RB20DET can be had as cheap as a few hundred or maybe a thousand USD. The other RB engines with front clip tend to run about US$5K here if I remember. You will also need the transmission from the Skyline GTS-T for RWD apps.
The RB20DET is a good engine and can make a reasonable level of power for the price.
