Mike: At the risk of going on a bit about your problem, you won't be able to see the spacer by taking the pinion nut and flange off, it's behind the front bearing and I can assure you there's one in there. Depending on what torque you applied and assuming it was over the 120lbsft or so, will have crushed the spacer further and slacking the pinion nut off will not cure the problem. That was why I was trying to establish what torque figure you used. The measurements we are talking about are only minimal but make a big difference to diff backlash.
