My pinball machine is still not working, not even powering up now!
Have swopped transformer and other items from the spare machine I have, but still no joy.
It is Gorgar from 1979- 1st speaking pinball machine, with heartbeat that gets faster the longer you keep the ball in play.

Easy to fix...you just need to get it to me :)

I found the Mame page for my machine...

MAWS - showing resource: enigma2

Mine definitely has a Zilec sticker on it and a Taito badge, and the controls look more like space invaders and has Japanese writing on it, and thinking about is in fact this

MAWS - showing resource: enigma2a

I have a box full of old space invader roms...you can have a set. There are jumpers on the rom board that need to be set though depending on weather you have 2708 or 2716 eproms installed.

Spill the beans then!
Is it something I can do myself?
They will have to go up for sale, as they are taking up my Z space in the garage.
No more room in the house since we moved Jay into the larger bedroom. :(

Mark.

Let me dig out the schematic for it and have a look, then i can tell you in more detail what to test and what colour wire etc .

Got any top lane switches for my CFTBL pinball? Also ideas on why the ball in the tray doesn't reliably get flipped across to the loading point?

We should have a classic arcade section on the site and you can be technical adviser for a change!

Mark, Is the game dead? no lights or sound? if so can you lift the playfield and check the fuse/ fuses near the on off switch on the bottom. Check the mains plug is ok too, I've seen games people have tried to fix for the problem to be a wire that has come out in the plug. If the playfield lights up but the game itself is dead the check fuse F5 on the power supply board on the lower right inside the main head of the game... Internet Pinball Machine Database: Williams 'Gorgar' Images

Select volts ohms on your meter and remove the fuse from the board to check it.....make sure its 0 ohms (short)
Then fit the fuse back in, select volts DC on your meter and connect the red to pin 10 and the black to pin 11 of connector 3J6 at the top of the power supply board....pin 15 being far right of the connector. You should have +5v at this point. If not, good I can tell you how to fix it...if you do then the problem is most likely on the main logic board...it would take me a lot of time to explain to you how to fix that :) plus you will need a logic probe. If you can get it to me I can fix it for you for free.
You could just sell the game me ! :)

Cheers

Mike sorry I don't have any....are they just regular micro switches?
As for the ball kicker, it could be a bad solenoid, bad wiring, or bad drive transistor....I need to look at it really.
Does it operate the kicker ok in test mode? you will need to pull the interlock switch if you test it with the door open.
I've just cleared my garage out and I must have 500 old arcade PCB's in boxes.....I have about 10 sets of star wars game boards that fetch £200 each and 10 sets of star wars monitor boards that fetch the same.....all gathering dust....time to sell it all and spend it on the Z :)

Thank you twoforty, I'll start from there tonight :)

Enigma 2 (Space Invaders Hardware) enigma2a.zip Rom Download for MAME at ROMNation.NET

I found my Enigma II rom there, I guess the one for the Mame emulator is the same as for my game? If so is there a way to have that written to some new chips please? The underlay is all Enigma II and I'd like to stick with that if possible.

Where can I buy new gels please? My the middle red gel, I tried to peel it off when I was a kid  it's not as good as the rest of them now, doh

Russ, Are the Roms 2708 or 2716? I can test them to see if the Checksum is ok. Yes the Mame Roms are the actual game Roms so worst case I can program some more for you unless they are 2708's...I don't think my programmer supports those. We could always use 2 x 2716's instead of 4 x 2708's :)

I'll investigate and make that the first thing I do after work thank you :) Woop very very excited, she's not worked for about ten years!

Ok didn't get time, but this morning I put the meter on it.

Firstly I noticed by the transformer there is a missing fuse! Possibly this one was the dead one from ages ago and I never replaced it (doh) or possibly I think it kept blowing.

Anyway the one fuse that was in there, I put the meter on it and the screen started to light up! I'm guessing crappy contacts on it.

I'll get the diagram out, check the fuse sizes in a bit and go get some at lunch along with some contact cleaner and see where that takes us. Have attached picture of said PSU.

Also didn't have time to eye up the roms, presumably it's printed on them somewhere what chip size they are.

Cheers

Oh I forgot, I'm not too hot on electronics, so didn't managed to meter the working fuse properly. Will find the correct earth point to take my readings with later hopefully. When I put the meter over the holder for the missing fuse it read 14v after settling down...

If anyone can help me relate the transformer to my circuit diagram that'd be really helpful please.

Should be a good basic electrics learning experience for me :)

Please dont check fuses with it plugged into the mains ! Be very careful . Post the drawing of the transformer and i will explain

Well as long as it's switched off, you're at the advantage of having an earth if you leave the plug in (at least on computers less than 20 years old) :) I'm a bit of a numpty with electrics, but have a very healthy fear of them as well :)

The diagram is the last three pages of the manual in my attachment (on page 3 of this post I think), I've got a feeling you found the manual for me

I got five fuses, will pop a new one in later into the missing fuse hole and see if it blows.

Thanks v much, even my mates cannot wait to get it working now!

Wow,

Just got home, inserted two fuses, turned it on...

The transformer had a glow from within, then the second fuse that blows all the time (with the brown wires) blew and some smoke came from the bottom of the cab somewhere....

Any ideas please? :)

Thank you very much :)

The Transformer was glowing???? the large square block with all the wires coming off it? really? oh dear.

You will have 240v AC on the input of the (isolator) transformer....then you will have 100v for the monitor and some other voltages which are used by the power supply board which is under the monitor......its a linear power supply on that model...I prefer those to the modern switch mode type on the later games.

Coinop.org /// Some Random Page

check out the picture of the power supply on this page 2nd picture up from the bottom left. You will see a silver device mounted on a heat sink on the left hand side of the PCB ...its the 5v regulator and is probably the cause of your problem. Unplug the game, remove the monitor.....be careful with the tube and try not to hold onto the High tension wire thats plugged into the back of the tube....they can bite!!! You should be able to get a friend to hold the tube to give you enough space to get the power supply PCB out. Once you have it out get back to me and I will tell you how to check the regulator with your meter. Don't try it again until we havce checked that....and make sure you Always use the correct rated fuse :)

As for the game itself it looks in fantastic conditon....I would keep it as Enigma but I have spare inlay cards for space invaders if you ever wanted to convert it back.
Also if you look at the game board in this picture http://www.coinop.org/kk/si/board_sound.jpg

you will some small blue ceramic capacitors.....they often go short circuit and are on the +12v line which will blow a fuse.....finding the dead one is an art.... a low ohms meter that can measure to 0.01 of an ohm helps.
