Petrol cap 280zx.

Advice needed please....

The petrol cap on my 1981 280zx has had non-setting sealant smeared around it,can i assume this is to make a pressure seal in the tank and that an original seal has failed?

If so what type of replacement cap will i need,are there different types?

OEM cap had a rubber O-ring to seal. However, these turn to putty with age. They are not listed on the parts fiche, but it might be possible to find a suitable replacement elsewhere (caps themselves are long gone from Nissan's lists and NOS are likely to have deteriorated O-rings anyway).
The cap is externally visible and decorative, so really only the original will do!
