Original wheel bearing on its way out!

Hi guys

I have a problem that I thought I had solved yesterday but came to another dead end. I have a 1992 300ZX TT.

I first noticed a new sound in the cabin several weeks ago while on my way back from the airport. It always sounded like tyre rubbing in the wheel arch but there was no uneven wear when I checked. I put the car in for a service and asked the garage (Not Nissan) to check for any humming sounds from the wheels but they could find nothing wrong which I thought was odd as they have dealt with these cars before. Anyone who has driven any car for a while knows what it sounds like so I knew something was up and I wasn't going crazy. So I got a second opinion from a garage in town and they determined the fault to be with the near side rear bearing.

To cut a long story short after becoming a full member of Z club I was put in contact with a guy that breaks Z32's and he sold me the entire near side rear wheel hub which is great. Problem is I can't find anyone that will fit the thing. Garages will only fit new parts because of insurance purrposes??!! I guess I should have seen this coming!

I live way down in Hertfordshire. Does anyone know of a 300ZX specialist nearby. If not I will travel as I have to get this done. Can anyone help?

Hello again guys!

Just want to thank everyone for the info they have supplied.
Here is an update so far:

I had the second hand wheel bearing/hub and engine cooler fitted. The mechanic was really cool. Charged me for time and labour at a reasonable price for both jobs and did them both quite quickly too. Respect to the man for that! He said there would be more work required to change from the standard gearbox cooler to the old engine cooler as there was no discernible gap to feed the pipes through. If there was a hole made then there would be a danger of the rubber pipes supplied becoming cut or pinched if resting on metal close to the radiator. So I decided to go with his recommendation and leave the gearbox cooler alone. But he said to come back if I really want to change it.

I'm still having problems with the hub however. :( The old humming sound has disappeared along with the original hub. But with the new secondhand hub fitted to the car I'm getting a much louder pulsing vibration inside the cabin which I can feel down by the pedals and footwell. :( Looks like the part fitted is also faulty  and may have been left exposed to the elements for too long. I'm only guessing it was left outside for yonks but it did arrive in the post with bits of grass sticking out from it here and there :) . Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a new bearing after all. Ah well, such is life! :)

My family and friends are trying to get me to sell the car as I've spent a fair bit on it already. My dad still wants me to keep it though. She has given me many miles of driving pleasure. I am going to keep my 300ZX TT no matter what! :D

Has anyone else had a problem like this?
