I keep finding things to do to my 300 whilst the engine is out. So far, I HAVE to replace the pistons, rings, rods and bearings, which also means I need a Cometic Head Gasket and I need to get my heads refurbished whilst they're off........problem is, I can't help thinking I should upgrade the injectors whilst the engine is in bits.......and I should fit a lightweight flywheel........and I should fit some high-flow exhaust manifolds........erm buy a house did I hear someone say?

Grrrrrrr, pistons and bearings this week, then high flows and head gasket a fortnight later, then depending on how long it takes to get my block and heads back from the engineering place, I may end up buying more bits ......... Gunna break the £20k mark on this stupid car this year!

See? It's not ME that's mental!!

I was watching him drool over a $500USD flywheel on Z1 motorsports last night!

You can do the injectors later surely?

If you put a light weight flywheel on, be sure to balance it out with with lightweight pulleys at the front.

It's important to have the crank in balance to avoid excessive wear at either end.......

We have a lightweight crank pulley already mate, could do with lightweight water pump, alternator and ps pump pulleys too though.

Yes, but the point I was making is whilst you've got everything out you could balance the whole crank That will help in giving a smoother running engine !

Yeah the crank will be off for balancing whilst it's out. Going to the same engineering shop that the block and heads are going to.

why not just give me the rebuilt engine and you will then have a fully lightened engine bay in nice paint to show off. Only downside you would have to trailer to shows lol

Forgive me for the following comment but it's based with best intentions. Why not get jimmer to assemble all those nice parts? It's winter now, so even if funds are low there's no massive rush. It would be a shame for you to spend all that cash and a silly mistake make it counter productive.
This is my intention, for myself. I've built simple sohc engines, but the vg is a tad more expensive to build and particular. If a jobs worth doing and all...

I was planning to tbh mate, but decided to do it myself for numerous reasons. For one thing, money of course, but secondly and more importantly, I know I'm capable and therefore I should do it myself. I always did my own mechanics when I started out with cars and for a time, was a mechanic for a living (Not very long as I wasn't quick enough and was far too keen to be sat in a warm office for a living instead).

As it's been a while since I took anything on that was this intense, I'm taking my time, I'm making sure I check and triple check everything and I'll be taking my time putting it all back together too.

Our car has somewhat of a badge of honour for us, in us doing everything to it ourselves. Aside from the odd thing I've paid Mike to do because he had the space/time/tools that I didn't have, I've done all the mechanics. Again, Mike has helped me in places where I knew I needed it, or he happened to be around at the time and bored, but one way or another, if something has been done to it, I've done it, or been heavily involved in doing it.

Wasn't the snail (Or at least it wasn't JUST the snail, lol). Removed the manifolds on both sides and oil came pouring out of cylinders 5 and 6 outlets.

Drivers side, which was smoking the worst, the impeller is rock solid (No play) and whilst I thought the impeller was wobbling a lot on the passenger side, I'm now wondering actually if it's not so bad, but will be sending it to CR Turbos for a thorough check anyway, along with the drivers side just to be safe and a spare passenger side tubbie that has NO play, for parts, just in case it's needed.

Oh right, well that's something at least. Do you remember the discussion we had about crank case pressure and leaking turbo seals? Guess that was happening then. If you sucking oil into the combustion chamber you were likely pushing out air into the crank casing aswel. End result high back pressure poor turbo drainage... Smoke....compounded with oil being pschyically combusted.
I thought you has done a compression test?

I don't think the turbo seals were leaking at all tbh. Looking at the engine in bits now, I'd say one or more of the cylinders that was lower on compression than I wanted, was allowing lots of blow-by, causing the oil control rings on the other cylinders to fail. What's odd, is that the car was still running and boosting, so perfectly, with all that smoke. Either way, with new pistons and rings and a freshly bored block, the problem should go away now.

That said, my oil pressure was always particularly high, confirmed even more when I fitted aftermarket gauges. My digital gauge only registers upto 120psi and it would hit that religiously when cold, but warmed up and on full boost it was still around 90+psi and on idle it was still over 50psi at all times, lol. So who knows, maybe the oil pressure being so high constantly, was in fact pushing oil out through the turbo seals, may not have had anything to do with crank case pressure at all. Some credence is leant to that too, by the fact that there is no visible damage to any of the rings and every piston looks to have been burning the same (Discolouration and markings all identical).

I'm switching to a different block and different heads with this rebuild, all of which will be properly machine and prepared, so fingers crossed, no more issues.

There is a new Hyper twin plate Exedy clutch and flywheel on DW for £400 problem is it had no discs with it and that's another £500.

That's the same clutch I had 2 of before I sold them.
