Try fresh fluid and a new filter - otherwise it sounds like a rebuild. It is often the top gears that go first, shortly followed by the rest. Any slippage in first and second? What happens with third - stays in second or goes into slip mode? In Z32 or later Z31, if no change up there could be an electronics fault. There is a gearbox diagnostic mode for Z32 or you could see if a local Nissan dealer knows how to use CONSULT on your car......

Mine is doing the exact same thing.

Changed the fluid but not the filter. Where is the filter?. How would changing it cure the problem??

Thanks

Roy

Try resetting the ECU, disconnect the battery for 30 mins or so. This has been known to reset probs, with the gearbox not shifting.

Auto box filter is on the underside of the valve body in the pan. The pan has to come off to drain the fluid anyway so this is the time to change it!

Sorry if you've already read this reply on 300zx forum but I had the same problem a couple of years back. The consult system claimed there was no problem ? but I couldn't change out of 2nd. It turned out the clutch between 2nd and 3rd gears.

I took mine to Judges transmissions down in London and they overhauled the box and replaced all the clutches with uprated ones to handle extra power. Cost about £1800 I think.

Sounds extremely expensive.

What happened to mine is last march was driving and it happenned. Just lost third gear. Box dropped to second and started to scream. Pulled over turned ignition off for a couple of mins.

Drove the car for another 3 months till june when exactly the same thing happened. This time it hasnt recoverd by itself and has been sitting ion the drive since. This is why I dont think its a clutch problem as once thats gone it wont come back.

I have a 91 UK spec auto but no one seems to know wether I can drop the series 1 gearbox into the Series 3 car. (94 SWB)??

I would then convert my uk spec to manula and keep my SWB auto unless I can resolve this soon. I am hoping its just a stuck solenoid as all diagnostics are clear

UK specification and import (Japanese home market) specification auto boxes are not compatible. The control units are also different. Even on a UK car, Nissan have updated the spec on the control unit. If you were to order a new (&#33 Nissan UK auto box, there is what they call a "set supercession" where you are expected to buy the updated control box at the same time as the new box (about another £500-£600).

I am having this problem at the moment also. I seem to have lost third gear, but using '1' and '2' manually seem to be fine (luckily I only live 10 mins drive from work!). A diagnostic has shown all clear, and the fluid on the dipstick is pink in colour and doesnt smell burnt. I am about to try resetting the ecu.

i have auto box problems to but with first gear it doesnt kick down sometimes and i lose the gear altogether the car starts in 2nd if i put it manualy in 1st i slips then bangs into gear oil and filtters have been changed i think the box is shot any ideas

Hi all, just had my auto trans re-built, Z32 TT, mine was slipping and just before expireing completley it was making a terrible buzzing sound. the buzzing sound turned out to be a result of the filter being blocked, fine you might say thats an easy fix, not until you find out its blocked by all the stuff off your clutch plates !!!!! i had my vehicle recovered from romford to a transmission specialist in Erith Kent, stripped my box and rebuilt it with larger clutch pack, very reasonable i think change out of £ 1200.00, so far all is working ok with 2 yr guarantee. My car is a jap import by the way.

can you give us the name or number of the place as i want to rebuild mine did they remove you gearbox as i want a gearbox just supplied :Z32: .
