Nissan LD28 diesel crankshafts
What Nissan vehicles are they actually found in ?

Will one from a 93/4 2.8 Patrol be of the right type to make a 3.1 stroker ?
Does it make any odds if it's from a turbo vehicle?
ta :)

Are you hinting that there's a 93/4 2.8 patrol lurking in your yard? Does the engine look anything like a L series engine or is it a naughty V6 diesel? Whenever people talk about the LD28 engine, it's always in a Maxima diesel which I don't think we got, at least not with LD28 in it.

Awaiting input from the more clued up!

Cheers,
Rob

Rob it's deffo not a V-engine lol ;)
Looking at auto data, it lists an LD28 diesel and T/diesel available in a Patrol in that yr.
Just not sure that's the crank that's needed tho.

Starting to sound interesting. Any chance of a pic? Can I have first dibs on it? £5 and a baby of jelly beans? ;)

From ZHome.com

"The LD28 crank was offered in the early 80's Nissan/Datsun Maxima Diesel. It was known as the Datsun 810 in the late 70Ìs with Maxima being a high trim level. In 1981, the 810 became the Maxima, and for the first time, a 2.8L 80hp diesel was offered. The diesel was not a very popular option and was discontinued in 1983. As you can see, only three model years offer a possibility of having the diesel motor, which carries the LD28 crank."

Note to readers:

*There are several other countries in the World other than the USA*

One of them is called Japan. A land full of Skylines, Laurels, Stanzas, Cedrics, Glorias, Cimas and umpteen other automobiles / boats / forklifts / pumps powered by Nissan's LD28 engine.

Take a peek at London Taxi power plants too......

You might well presume that, but I couldn't possibly comment..... :p

The main point I wanted to make is that the LD28 engine was widely used in a huge array of applications over a number of years. Their very limited use in the United States of America means that using American-sourced, USA-centric information only makes any sense for people living in the USA.

Americans tend to call the LD28 crank a "Maxima" crank because that's just about the only application they know about. But the LD28 crank didn't start out in the Maxima and didn't finish in it either.

They are still being made and supplied by Nissan, by the way.

Very Nice.. I take it this is for someone who wants to build a high compression 3.1 engine, or stroker as they call it.

Hehehehe... I have no idea what that means, but all this talk of stroking sounds rude! :D

Anyone care to enlighten me?

The basics are; L28 block is overbored, a LD28 crank is fitted and L24 con rods and bigger pistons. The horses are the same/only a bit more than a well sorted L28, but as you are using a diesel crank which has more throw (stroke) than a petrol crank, the idea is that it produces more torque. There are a few people here running/building one (me included), but they are an expensive option compared to a well honed L28, mainly due to the machining work.

Cheers
Ian
