My Lad's faulty Golf 4 Motion

Thank god for that, thinks are looking up (even though you are back where you started!)

Have you checked the spark plugs yet? Then you could determine if it is actually burning too rich due to overfuelling or if the coilpacks/plugs themselves might be buggered and not giving a proper burn.

Glad you said that because I've mentioned that to him. I also know some VW coils can break-down (had it on a 1.4). My VR6 coil-pack 'leaked' to earth too and had to be replaced. These are individual on top of each plug though like the 1.4.

Car does run ok though, i.e. not obviously on 5 cylinders.

It started ok this morning and got him to work fine. Shame he lives 50 mls from me really.

Should have seen this earlier!

The ECU would need to be coded - Ive got all the stuff to do it Rob.

However, its rare for a 4motion ECU to be faulty. I'd look elsewhere.

If you need a hand and your son is local I can come over and have a look. Ive built plenty of these and stripped plenty down!

Just noticed you said he lives 50 miles away! Thats a shame...

Coil packs can be a problem on these but wouldnt usually throw up that fault code I dont think. VW are currently offering a free recall on most cars though for coil packs so might be worth contacting them anyway just for that.

Thanks Dan, I usually work on my kids cars here. So if we decide to investigate further (rather than get his local garage to fit a Lambda sensor) I'll get back to you. His local garage have worked/serviced this car for a while for the previous owner.

No Problem Rob,

I have spare lambdas and all sorts of bits for them at the garage so just let me know.

If its a post cat lambda it can also be coded out.

I've found out that when he left it ticking over he had lots switched on (including heated seat ) so it drained the battery and brought up some lights.!

Shouldn't the alternator be able to handle that even on tick over?

Perhaps might be an idea to check the voltages at the alternator. Low volt/current return from the alt can give mis readings on the OBDCII as some of the circuits won't be working properly under lower volts...

Just a thought, and as always I am an amateur and could be wrong :smash:

Ametuer or not the battery should not have been drained in that short space of time, i suspect the care is equipped with a smart charge system which means the alternator is capable of producing high amperage after starting when the battery is cold, the battery should be a silver calcium as to handle this, i should think your battery is on its last legs with not a lot of capacity

just a foot note car ecu systems run on about 5 volts, before you spend lots of cash check and clean all multi plugs and earthing points, vw along with renaults suffer problems here

That battery needs replacing to
