My Christmas jobs for the '32

Hi all,

Been building up many jobs on my 300, got a few days to fix them.

Problem 1, Noisy belt drive when using heater.
New problem I noticed this morning. When I turn the heater system on and it's not on the screen it gets very noisy at this point. I'm guessing something has worked it's way loose but as it's such a pain in the ass place to get to I'd like some heads up on common problems.

Youtube video so you can hear the problem and see which bit is engaged to cause the noise.

Thank you v muchly, more to follow! :)

Problem 2, no screen demist. As advised in this thread

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=103387

it appears my heater flap control system has gone funny, in that it doesn't direct air to my screen, it goes no where and kind finds it's way out in the small vent above the centre console. As advised (thanks guys) in this thread I ran the built in diagnostics.

I put it into the diagnostics mode, and I don't get the expected 00 readout straight away, it comes up with a 5? And so I get lost instantly. I've again made a youtube video, if anyone can see it and make any sense of it I'd very much appreciate it.

I should have remembered to buy a conzult set up before the Christmas holiday :(

Which brings me neatly onto problem 3, easy one this, temp sensor has fallen out...

I just went to take a photo and spotted it fits neatly into the side of the heater pipework. Can someone just confirm this used to be held in with the sticking strip around the outside?? Or is there some clip I'm missing? At least I might get one thing sorted today :D

Problem 4, tappetty when in first/second gear and on throttle. Engine sounds tappety, but I guessed it'd have hydraulic lifters. This scares me as with my simpleton logic if it does and it's sounding tappety I'm suffering some low oil pressure. The gauge sits just below the 4, but I've read these are notoriously crap. Oil level is fine with fresh oil as well. Anything to worry about or try not to until I fit a decent oil pressure gauge?

Cheers

What oil are you using russ?

You Marcus you are consistently the only person any help to me here or on 300zx.co.uk, thank you! :)

Mobil something or other, the best they had in Hellfrauds. I can go look what it is id you need specifics, it was about £25 for a 5ltr jobber I think?

russ on the windscreen defrost problem, why didnt you press the window defrost button next to the auto button?

chuck in some lifter treatment and thicker oil and see if that makes a difference. does it not tick on idle? remember mine, it sounded like a load on tickover but got quieter as the revs built up (well either that or the engine noise drowned it out)

watched you vid of the pully noise and the noise looks to be comming from your water pump, and it looks like it came to a complete halt, which isnt a good thing.

ignore the above, looks the the idler ill investigate the web a bit more

Mate, I can't believe the number of people who suggested that to me... *sighs* lol

I'm ordering myself a conzult before I pull the dash to find out what's broken if I can, or if I'm bored this weekend I'll give it a go. Must be something to do with the way the flaps in side direct the air as it's all ok until you try to direct the air to the screen (whichever way you chose to do it) and then it's just no air (although the fans are still going).

I don't seem to notice it on idle, it's either going away as revs rise or like you say more likely drowned out. I'll try a different oil though thanks. It's only done about 65k but I guess there could be some crap/gunge in the head.

.

its your air con compressor sticking by the looks of it.

Nice pic thanks, yeah it appears to be. My air con works on though. To me the on/off rattle sounds like when the electric clutch/brake on drive motors lose a phase and they sort of fire on and off repeatedly. Not suggesting my engine is three phase, but I'm guessing that aircon pulley must have some sort of electronic clutch to it to bring it in and out? Maybe it's electrical or the faces are tired. Picture gives a big help ta.

This is the nylon gears on the motor that operate the flap. You have three motors on the side of the Heater matrix housing. One moves a flap for hot and cold. Another moves a flap to sellect aircon or heater/fresh and finally 1 operates the dirction of air flow. Eventually their arn't enough good teath to move the flap. Then it will be stuck at either your feet, the Windsreen (not too bad), Screen and feet if your really lucky or if your unlucky at the face blowers.

The bad news is that the process of removing these motors from a breaker generally results in the gears getting fooked and do you really want to have your dash out to find you are going to have to do it again. The other bad news each motor costs about £180. They are all different and not interchangerble. So get it right first time.

Russ the ticking noise, do you know what part of the engine it coming from or have you only noticed it when sat in the car? It seems strange that yiu cant hear it on idle, lifters tend to be at the peak ticky when the car has just been started after a sitting for a while.

Still looking into the possible other causes for you. I know VTC problems tend to be a irregular tapping,
http://www.300zx.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=81390&highlight=vvt
Lifter tapping speeds up as the revs rise and is a regualr tap that tend to quiet down when the engine warms up, plus the sound come from the top of the engine when you open the bonnet.
Tapping or ticking from the bottom of the engine could be the Shells or cams.
Ticking from behind the dash could be the heater motor.

I reckon it does it on idle. I probably don't hear it because either a) I've got my heaters on keeping the screen dry so it idles at about 2000rpm. Then if not it still idles quite high I think. Maybe 1600rpm? Could be my rev counter maybe as it doesn't sound that fast. I think if I open the bonnet you can hear it and it's definitely from the head.

That heater flap problem sounds a lot like mine (I get everywhere but screen though so maybe only a few teeth). Sounds like a pain to fix as well though. Lets hope it's not that maybe.

We need a South West meet where I can bring it along for you to have a listen!

What oil did you use? I'm not running any extra boost although maybe when i've sorted all the problems I will do :) I don't think mine quite has the kick but you did have an auto so...
