Measuring a cranks stroke

I have a crank, which is not in an engine, and I wish to measure its stroke, what is the best way of doing it.

If I were to measure the crank arm and times it by 2, i should get the stroke. But where would i take my measurement from? Is it the complete length of the crank arm or from the centre starting and centre ending points? And how can this be done accurately, a few mm off will have a considerable effect.

Cheers.
