L28E Air flow meter upgrade?

Hi all!
The airflow meter in my L28E has half stopped working and now it's flooding the engine.
Basically some of the connections are working, so the ECU knows that an AFM is connected, but other pins in the connector aren't and it thinks that tones of air are coming in, and is pouring fuel in the cylinders. Everything works well inside the AFM up to the connector, but no signal goes out the connector itself (see images). So I guess the connector itself is broken inside or something.
And please dont tell me to clean the connector, I've been already half an hour with contact cleaner and a wire brush!

Before ordering a replacement AFM from USA, is there any upgrade possible? I know the L28E engine has been used in many other cars and maybe there is a nice AFM upgrade around which just needs some re-wiring for the 280z ECU??

Hi Alfonso,

Most on here use carbs but there's a handful running injectors, and a few who have kept the stock e-tronic system.

I'm not sure of an upgrade but I have most of the old EFI components from when I removed mine, including the AFM.

Happy to sell you my AFM if you are interested.

Alex

Knowing that, I will cut open the connector and see if I can weld what is broken. If I don't manage to fix it or I break it even further, I will contact you to get your AFM

Hi Alfonso have you cleaned the contact strip with a carbon rubber ? if not plenty on ebay new and used .i have had a few problems with my efi but dont want to go down the carb route . chris

I actually cleaned the contacts with a wire brush attachment on a Dremel and they look like new...
One of the contacts was broken and I welded it, so now it's working . The temperature sensor is not working, but I already ordered a thermistor to replace it.
Anyway, the engine is still flooding and misfiring like mad, so the AFM wasn't the issue and this is driving me crazy!

I had a similar problem of flooding and misfiring on my '77 280Z.
I unplugged the cold start injector, which stopped the issue and probably means the thermo-time switch has failed.
It's an easy check to do.
I still haven't bothered fixing it as it is only a little more difficult to fire up from cold.

Yep, I thought the same, so i disconnnected it and so unplugged it from the fuel just in case it was stuck open.
I finally sorted it, it was the water temperature sensor. It's broken, open contact. Looking at the manual, the water temperature sensor can duplicate the amount of fuel! Crazy. I hot wired the sensor to simulate high water temperature, now it runs smooth! Idling for 30 minutes, then I removed the wire and instantly flooded.

I have upgraded my other 280Z to the FAST EZ-EFI system from Z Car Depot, as has Makesy.
It deletes the AFM and uses MAP instead along with readily available sensors.
It now starts almost instantly with the first turn of the key (hot or cold).

just done the same thing to my 280z it is running a little rich . theres a guy on ebay how is selling new for £19.95 all in also some folk even disconnect the cold start valve . on looking the problem with starting when hot is dew to heat soak and this can be fixed by fitting a billet fuel rail which is my winter job .also looks way better about £400 from zcardepot . turns out this was driving two men crazy keep the faith fuel injection is the future 1989 - eternity or apart form electric but i will be dead before theres no petrol left . chris
