I wrote a program for gear boxes, ratios, mph, tyre height etc

Hi,

With the chat about gear ratios and such past two days thought I'd write us our own little program.

I only did it today so haven't tested it greatly, and it only has some basic features. Can someone download it, test it, and tell me if its right? Apologies if it's wrong.

I know there are loads of these about but we can have our own branded one and it might get us some more traffic.

The program works by just entering the numbers, this is beta 1 so more features can be added later (with proper installer) and if you want the program to work differently let me know.

To run this you will need to be running the Microsoft .NET framework version 1.1, this is available HERE but if you are running any moderately modern version of windows and have ever run windows update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com <- you really should have by now) then you'll already have it. Just try running it to find out.

Anyway let me know if it's rubbish or not and what I should add next.

I'll download it in a mo and give it a whirl. In the meantime, today I bought a copy of CarTest 2000 for a whopping 20 quid.

This sucker is fun as it actually simulates a drag run!! What is interesting though is that changing the gearbox ratios really only make a difference of a few tenths of a second to the overall 1/4 mile time. What does make a difference is power - quel surprise!!

Lots of fun being able to change all the parameters, and do dump clutch starts or slip the clutch to save that knackered old drivetrain ;)

Attached are a couple of screen shots of a stock 240Z run, although if someone can confirm the 240Z 5 speed ratios that would be handy, the ones I have are from evil Haynes manual!

Cheers,
Rob

can't get it open, sorry running a modern version XP.
Did you get an error message? Are you running the .Net framework? (I expect so).

Lovely,

What features should I add tomorrow whilst at work?

I'd say you need to at least get the speed/revs/gear graph in place. Makes it much easier to see how the gears are spaced, and of course looks fancy ;)

Cheers,
Rob

Downloaded the programme M soft, downloaded your programme, entered the figures but get no speeds ! And how do you calculate the power, obviously a factor against wind resistance ?

Version 0.1.5

George, thanks, I'll check them out sometime.

Sean, you need figures in diff ratio, wheel height and rpm for it to do anything, then you can add gear ratios. It should all be automagic.

Here is todays stab at a graph and kph. It runs fine on my laptop but seemed slow on this machine so apologies for any bugs, grab me a screen shot if you find one.

I’m sure this little help will beat them all…… from down under.
This is so funny to work with.. All right it has nothing to with gear boxes but still.

Yeh just been playing with that :) Have changed my engine plan now quite a bit.

Would like to do something like that, is there anything else I could include?
