Headlight wiring

Thought I might try and tackle the front harness today, so I unwrapped what there was and wish I hadn't

There are splices everywhere and wires that don't lead anywhere at all.

But the main thing confusing me is the headlights; there are 4 wires coming out of each side but the FSM shows there should be 3. So are these not stock headlights?

Not sure about all the wires - that may be normal.

However the one strange thing about 240Z headlights is that they are turned on by switching an earth to them!

Yeah, it's a bit odd! I would have thought the high and low bulbs inside each headlight would share a common live, and so the headlight unit would have 3 wires.
