Got the Z rolling road tuned today

Retrading the timing heats up the exhaust and valves becuase the mixture is still burning (late) when the exhaust valve is open dumping heat into the exaust. You want as much advance as you can get away with without causing knock....the yanks even talk of rumble (just before knock) as a guide.

So why would Richiep want to retard his ignition a couple of degrees ?

Is it safe to floor the throttle when swiching off seems like a lot of un burnt fuel stripping the bores of oil for the next start up

When I first built the engine my car was running on when the engine was warm, I advanced the timing and it cured it. And ive since advanced it to 15' without any problems

If I understand correctly, running on can be a consequence of running too much advance. Now my engine may not be technically running too much advance compared to what people run on Zs (there is no pinking occurring for sure) but there is a clear running on issue.

I'm just going from past experience here - when the engine/ignition timing was originally set-up last year, it had a tendency to run on quite badly. Mark Rayner adjusted it slightly (using timing light) taking 1-2 degrees out of the advance it was running. This alleviated the problem.

When rolling roaded, as I mentioned above, Ric Wood advanced it again a couple of degrees, basically to where it was originally. This reintroduced the running on, which can be several seconds worth of less than subtle convulsions in this case!

If somebody wants to tell me that is fine and acceptable, then go ahead. I'll admit to knowing very little about the technicalities of ignition timing etc etc. I just don't particularly like my car chucking a fit everytime I turn it off.

Just to be clear again when I said retarding the timing, I meant running a little bit less advance. Forgive my technical illiteracy if people though I meant something else.

I had never heard of the throttle blip approach to stopping running on. Seems to be mentioned in various places on the web as a common solution. Although it does seem like a bit of a sticking plaster rather than addressing the underlying cause.

Retarding takes heat out of the cylinder and into the exhaust advancing increase cylinder pressure and heat which then increase pressure :(
....could be a number of things causing it to run on though, without checking the TDC using a dial gauge and looking at the AFR's its a guessing game.

You'd need a lot of fuel to wash enough oil to worry about wear.

This is all getting very complicated but it seems clear to me that it is not the actual timing setting that is the cause of runing on but its what happens when the engine has been running for a while at a particular setting ,ie hot parts in the combustion chamber wether it be valves plugs or whatever but rest assured it is not good for any engine and i think you may find they can and probably are running backwards at times :eek::eek: which is what that strange wet induction noise with a light pinking in the background is ooh now thats bad
