Fuel gauge

If I fill my 240 right up to the top my fuel gauge still only reads half full.  What could be causing this?  Am never sure if I'm about to run out of fuel or not!

The fuel tank sender unit is the likely cause of the problem. There is also a small possibility that a 260Z or other Nissan unit could have been fitted in the past which is not compatible with the tank depth and/or the gauge.

dee has the perfect answer to the problem. it is a piece of twig about 2 foot long that you can slip down the filler into the tank to measure the fuel level, this will save the embarassment of running out of fuel yet again <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>
it worked for her over the weekend at gurston

Sender units are in the region of £35 to £40 + VAT. Lock plate and O-ring required to fit less than £2 the pair. Hopefully the loom connectors are not too corroded, otherwise you may be opting for the dipping stick philosophy!

I have same problem on a 260 2 + 2. Have replace sender unit but still no better. Even when tank full, gauge only registers 1/2. At present I rely on zeroing trip meter each time I fill up.

Look on the For Sale forum topics under "Put some rock in your Zed. Thats where the link is to them brackets is, wot I woz tellin u 'bout at Tatton Park. &nbsp; And dont cut any holes in them rear quarters, coz I aint got any more!! <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'>

I think it is worth checking the connection onto the sender unit. &nbsp; If it is poor then the gauge may read low.

I've just repaired my sender unit for my 260z. The problem was that rust had got behind the earth connection lug on the face of the sender and popped the lug off. This lug had originally been spot welded but I gingerly MIG welded it back on. Also both lugs connecting to the sender were badly corroded and had to be replaced. The sender unit is very delicate with a small contact brushing over a wire wound reostat. The fault could be bad connections on the lugs or connectors caused by 260z corrosion or bad contact with the reostat.
