fibreglass everything...

After my recent post about fibreglass spoilers etc. I was thinking what people thought of fibreglass panels. I am seriously thinking of going the whole hog and replacing wings, doors (if they exist???), headlamp buckets, spoiler, bonnet, tailgate in glass, and selling on my good steel ones. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I was thinking it would be a pretty good weight saving, and no more rust worries

cheers all,

fibre glass panels can end up as heavy as steel in order to get the rigidity for a road car if you are not careful. they are all available though through various people. at the moment i can do spoilers, bonnets and am going to make the moulds for the wings early next year. then i will produce the items in whatever material you want, carbon, polycarbonate or fibre glass. but they will be lightwieght ben

To get the panels rigid, they will need to be quiet thick, hence they will be heavy. Almost as heavy as the steel panels in some cases (as mentioned by Ben). I have a lightweight bonnet on my hillclimb 240z and it flaps around like crazy at speed. My advice would be unless you plan to go racing don't bother.

Doors are available, but I would worry about the fact you will have no side impact protection. Intend fitting door bars into my rollcage when I fit my grp doors.

Did you get the photo's of the spoiler?

Cheers.

Thanks for advice, is your bonnet mounted in the standard way or with pins? I have helped adrian francis take off his fibreglass bonnet on his gnose samuri, and that IS pretty heavy.

One reason I'm looking for fibreglass wings is because I feel so guilty drilling holes in perfect condition steel ones!

I got this pics of the front spoiler, thanks! I think its the same as the one wes has on his 260. Looks good, but I think it is a little bit too modern for the look i'm going for... the brake vents would be v useful though.. if anyone wants I can post the pics here?

thanks all,
phil

Wouldn't mind taking a look

If your gonna keep your Z forever why not opt for a Carbon Fibre bonnet or something?

Well Carbon would be definitely my first choice for bonnet if I can afford it!!

here are the pics of dave jarman's front spoiler

That bumper looks awesome, would be nice to see it finished and on a Z.

I *think* that CF bonnets custom made are around £600. Luckily my mate is doing his degree in Marine Engineering and can do me bodyparts for the price of a roll of CF and a curry/pint...

Bonnet is held down by 4 pins, it is single skin with some reinforcing to stop it flexing and breaking. It is very light, you can easily pick it up with one hand. A carbon version should be more rigid and will weigh less, but of course will cost a LOT more.

That is the same as the 1 on my Z but mine is a bit of a mess at the mo. you can see pics of it on Z driver.
