Extra gearbox 'plug'

It appears to be (and we're talking about the prutudence towards the rear, a bit rusty-coloured looking) to be some form of info sender....anyone know what box it is - it's on a 240Z !
 
Looks like a 240SX box

[EDIT] according to the magic of the internet it is the sensor position for overdrive / 4th gear
