Electric PAS Pump Progress

Tried the MR2 pump 'bodged up' today to check it would work in some fashion (see pic). Works OK, and should be possible to mount it in an original intercooler postion for convenient pipe runs.
Steering effort was a little more than with the stock pump, but there could be a few reasons for this.
1) The rest of the car electroincs were not powered up, so the PAS solenoid that controls the force would not have been operational. Not sure of it's fail state though, so need to check it out.
2) The pump has 3 smaller cables as well as the main power feeds, these may be speed / pressure control so need to find out what they do!
Either way, it was acceptable even as it was.

Excellent news!-good to have a back-up plan! LOL!;)

Nice one, interesting, glad I'm not the only one who bodges stuff together and lets it just hang around for testing purposes :)

managed to get hold of an MR2 wiring diagram, and although it doesn't tell me what the wires do without a key of some sort, they do appear to be switches that are on/off from inside the housing of the pump, not speed control.
Guess next thing to do is power up the steering ECU too then give it a shot!
Better see if there's an engine running signal to the steering system too I suppose.

The extra contacts turned out to be a pump running signal and a brush wear indicator contact for anyone interested.

with fear of repeating something you have already said does the new pump still work with the variable assistance of the original system.

fantastic project i keep looking in from time to time john well done!

Yes, should do, as the variable assistance is controlled by a solenoid on the rack its self. I may need to put a resistor in line with the feed to the pump if its too light on the move (or try to see if the code in the PAS ECU can be re-written!).
