E88 Head

I have just noticed to my surprise that my 77 260z 2+2 has an E88 head. I was under the assumption that it should have had a N42 head?
I have been running on unleaded will it still be ok or am I damaging the valve seats?
Cheers
Andrew

E88 head - completely normal. N42 on L28s.

You can eventually damage the seats - depends upon the mileage you do.

I was once told, by an exceptional mechanic, when asking the same 'unleaded' question about my 2.8 capri, that because it had been running on leaded fuel for the last 20 years or so, it would more than likely be fine, but you can buy LRP additive now, that just goes straight into your unleaded and helps to protect the valve seats, might be a good idea to start putting it in?

I read somewhere that from sometime in 77 onwards they used hardened seats, i know my car was made in 77 any way of identifying if it has the hardened seats, apart from taking the head off!
I alsohave read that some E88 heads have only the exhaust valve seat hardened??

Back when unleaded petrol was introduced, the poster in the service and parts departments at Nissan listed the '77/'78 260Z as being fine to run on unleaded without modification. Don't forget that these cars were designed for world markets and the Americans would have had unleaded from 1974 onwards.
If you are concerned or want to take a "belt and braces" approach, Millers have just reconfigured their excellent VSP additive and rebranded it VSPe. This not only provides lead substitute properties but also protects against some of the unwelcome effects of increased ethanol content of modern fuel and contains a corrosion inhibitor.(in stock at MJP...:))

Aye Mike
But I bet it aint cheap! super unleaded round here is now over £1.50/l
As I will probably do about 6000mile this year at 6mpl ave thats 1000liters and to treat that amount is going to cost big time. Do you do bulk discounts??
Maybe should save the money and wait till she starts to smoke oil all down the road and then I could justify getting the head work done.

Hi Mike might just take a punt on some of that, could you pm me for a price for 10 bottles and postage etc.
I take it that this stuff has a long shelf life?

quote=Mr.F;183236]It is cheaper than the old VSP at £3.99 + VAT for 250ml - should treat a tank full.[/quote]

Just give your reg number. Vin number and engine number to your local Nissan Dealer. They can probably look it up and give you an answer.

Thanks
Never thought of that, think I may get a few confused looks when I visit them though.
cheers
