door seals

Can anybody tell me if there are supposed to be any seals between the window frame and the windscreen pillar ("A" post?")? I am getting a lot of wind noise through there and when I look from the pax seat I can see that the lower part of the window frame doesn't actually touch the door seals.

Or do I maybe need to adjust something to eliminate those nasty draughts and convertible-like wind noises??

Cheers

The door seal on the aperture should contact the door and frame continuously. There are deflectors on the leading edge of each door which are mainly water diverters. The point of entry of the frame at the rear of the door is covered by a wrap-around strip, mainly cosmetic. The B-post quarter light frame area has an additional, but fairly stiff weatherstrip applied. The underside of the door has an L-shaped weatherstrip which seals to the sill. These areas would be common to 240Z and 260Z.

A genuine and original 240Z late door weatherstrip has an extra rubber flap at roof level which improves sealing to the frame and cuts down wind noise. Most aftermarket weatherstrips don't have this feature and I think it was introduced during the run of the 240Z (or possibly even on the first year of 260Z). Supercession of part numbers has clouded the issue for me and the part is now no longer available anyway. On the later 260Z there is a weatherstrip in the door frame channel which seals to the A-post and roof line to cut down the wind noise.

thanks for that Mike. ref your last sentence about the later 260 - could you explain that for me in words of one syllable (been a long week!) what that weatherstrip is actually attached to?

On the 240Z and early 260Z the top of the door frame is plain steel. On the later 260Z there is a groove formed in the top of the frame and the weatherstrip is pressed into this - from front of door to the upper rear of the frame. It acts against the A-post (screen pillar) and roof drip rail return to cut down wind noise. One of the small changes that make a late 260Z feel more of a "luxury" car than a 240Z.

ok...the next question then has to be.....is the 260 item a straight swop into the 240? And never having been in a late 260 - does it actually work?

The late 260Z frames are different to 240Z frames in ways other than the channel for the weatherstrip, so not an easy conversion - never say never, as with enough thought and the right parts it could be done...

Mr.F, are these strips that sit in a channel on top of the window frame, are they still available? If so, do you have a part number? I've got a 280Z with these said channels and those seals are pooched.

Put up a wanted ad - anyone who has purchased a weatherstrip kit from me for use on a 240Z or an early 260Z will have a pair of these surplus to requirements!
Alternatively, I can order a pair on my next USA shipment for you.

I have a couple going spare from one of the aforementioned kits from Mike, a part number would be handy though so I know which ones you need (it's a big box full of rubber bits, they all look the same to me!)
