I've just realized today that I put the old 240 alternator back on the car instead of the 280zx one I had planned. Charged well though 
with no voltage regulator to limit it. I thought it was old that the car turned off even thought i'd not used a diode. Anyway, the correct one is now fitted and so it doesn't shut down. I need to put a diode in the feild winding supply but I'm not sure on it minimum spec. Anyone got some advice?
