The problem was that the company who were acting as registrar caused the situation by not telling me they were no longer doing renewals on my behalf! I was getting the renewal reminders and passing them on in good faith...next thing I know, no Shop!

Here's a clue - which is closest, a Californian Z specialist's store room or the moon? The fixing kit arrived, but the bar (although invoiced) didn't get packed...investigation in progress.
