Cold start valve

Clamp the short hose leading to it and see if the situation improves - little chemistry lab tube clamps are ideal...

Other possible problems may include thermotime switch (which controls the cold start injector), water temperature sender and high fuel pressure due to defective regulator.

Jeeze, even with a heavy right foot on the turbo version I get 17 MPG which goes up to 24 on a motorway!

Have you checked your plugs to see if you're running really reach?

Here are a few things I can think of, hopefully the experts may shout and say if it's along the right lines..

1.) An air leak somewhere may be fooling the system to dump more fuel then required,
2.) A faulty MAF unit?

are you running standard/correct sized wheels and tyres?

if you have a sat nat- check your speedo and mileage readings on this, i thought my vehicles where very sore on fuel till i did this.....

just an idea........

When I first had my samuri it was running tripple 48's but the gearing was abit tall & returning nearly 30 mpg on the motorway . At the other extreme many years ago I had a 260 limo fitted with tripple 40's it would only do 12 mpg on a run & between 7 & 8 mpg around town  remember the time we where stuck in a jam on the m6 in that baby watching the fuel gauge going down it was quite worrying.

Thanks Everyone!!! My plugs are Seriously Rich...Black..I change them every few months and they are always the same... Shes running rich but you cant adjust anything can you?

Excessive richness will be due to a faulty component - see my previous post. There is a small amount of air correction available - at the throttle body on the early model and on a separate valve on the side of the manifold on later.

Have you Rang Mike usually for me after I have put the phone down the problems seem to disappear
He normally has loads of old working bits and pieces that I am sure he would loan you on a sale or return Basis

Well that looks silly as I wastyping it as Mike was posting up his reply

There is a very useful manual about that allows you to check every component on the injection system using a multi meter across pins on the ECU. This aided me in diagnosing a fault with the air flow meter. There was a link to it in the articles section of the site but it keeps moving around. PM me with your email address and I'll send you a copy in PDF format. It is for a 280z not a ZX but there is only one test where you need to work out the correct pin to use (because the pin advised from the 280z is missing on the 280ZX ECU).

Steve B,
I can send this to you too so the club can keep a copy on the server if you want.

Sorry I meant to add that this was the forerunner to computised testing used by modern cars (very clever for 1970s)
