Car hire

Ello :) I'm off to Italy again in September... anyone got any good information or links on hiring a car over there?

I've got about a two hour drive from the airport to where we want to be (visiting the missuses sister)

I've had one quote for £140, which seems good to me...

Any help would be grand!

Italy is expensive for car hire due to the accident rates. you dont say how long you have the car for but if thats for a week thats cheap! also what car is it?

if your going to drive anywhere near naples a word of warning, use your rear view mirror alot, i have done alot of miles over there and you only have to look at the local grave yard to find an answer to the poor standard of driving!:(

I went to a wedding in Italy last week and paid just over a £100 for 4 days, so if £140 is for the week then sounds good. Unfortunately i didnt have much choice as I only booked the day before, and arrived at midnight.

I guess if you've been before you may already know this, but for anyone else:

a) check the insurance on the cheap deal. Someone hit my rear door and disappeared, during a stop on the way to the airport and i was pleased to learn i had accidentally agreed (Italian? i can bearly speak english, i'm from Teesside) to the extra insurance. The excess was 800 euros as standard.

b) If you land at Ciampino, and arent travelling alone, get someone to retrieve your bags and go straight through to car hire. We spent almost 2hrs waiting for some people who we were with, while the helpful attendant sorted a booking problem (worth checking any booking on phone before you leave if poss.).

Cheers

Excellent! I'm up north too... Near Newcastle! I'm flying from Teeside to Ciampino, so if you have any details of where you booked websites etc... then let me know and I'll book the same deal!

Its £140 for 5 days, I arrive on Friday and arrive there at midnight, well 11:30ish...

I'm headding south, so once out of Rome I should be fine, a two hour bloody drive though, takes less time to fly to Italy! :D

I was looking at this foul car:
Opel Agila - 5 Doors, 4 Seats - Radio, Air-Con and Power Steering - £145

I might be in the shit a bit as I'm 24, 25 in November like... So, we'll see...

thats a good price, you may also find when you get there they say "after hours we want an extra 30 euro.s" they like doing that.

I rent a car in Italy from the cheap flight website there is usually a link to car hire there. I paid £120 for a week last year from Nice airport. Adriano

Sorry. I guess i'm a bit late if you are going today.:(

However, if you go next week try searching http://www.kelkoo.co.uk/
(travel section) that compares a number of companies for you. I see they find a corsa or punto for about £90 for 19th-23rd.

I drove south too. I think Grolls comments about driving are applcable to all of italy, as you will find on the autostrada. Straddling lanes (including the hard shoulder seems a favourite).

Many of the car rental places close at midnight, so you may want to check out their arrangements if delayed.

Cheers
