I recently bought a l28 engine, thought i'd strip it to have a look to see what the story is , and found it had the pistons below ! , I've had a good look but hit a blank on what they are ? they have the part number stamped into them P86 34, can anyone shed any light on these?? 0.jpg0-1.jpg

Okay thats interesting , however i've searched all over for an image the same as the ones i have and can't find anything? Many images of flat top without the raised part , i've tried the part number and still no luck , it just seems odd that if these are standard 280Z flat tops there seems to be no image's ? Perhaps i'm just not searching right any link that show's the above ?

The original part number was 12010-P8612 and they were standard equipment on 'Euro' (inc. UK) market S130-Series 280ZX models for 1982, 1983 & 1984, which came with the F54 type block casting and P90A non-hydraulic lifter head casting.

Nissan Motorsports USA used to sell them as a higher compression 'performance' upgrade as the USA market had dished pistons at the time.

Here's a bottom end I built up some 20+ years ago, using the F54 'Euro' block and the P86 'flat top' pistons:

Also , any idea the best place to buy a ring set ? Had a look in all the usual places Z store etc and they seem to only list Turbo 80 -83, would you know if these fit the above piston

You'll need to confirm the exact size of piston you have first. The P86 piston also came in two oversizes:

12010-P8612 L28 Piston 86mm
12033-P8610 L28 Ring Set 86mm

12010-P8615 L28 Piston 86.5mm
12036-P8610 L28 Ring Set 86.5mm

12010-P8617 L28 Piston 87mm
12038-P8610 L28 Ring Set 87mm

As far as I remember there's a difference between the P86 type rings and the other contemporary stock L28 rings, so they *might* not be interchangeable. Caution advised.

Thanks again for the help, mine are 86mm . as far as the ring type goes i'll take your caution seriously , but this seems to be the next issue where to find rings for these .
I've got a few supplier's that i would normally use but for these pistons they are drawing a blank, as i mentioned above the USA suppliers seem to only list Turbo rings or unclear on NA as they seem to be listed as 1978 - 81 so not the 'series 2' , i'll do some more digging but if you had any suggestions that would be another lead i could follow.

I built a big bore 260 engine a few years ago with these pistons and I'm pretty sure I did buy the rings from rockauto.

Actually, I checked and I bought them from ebay.
There are some available there, but twice the price I paid three years ago.

Sorry, I don't have any hard data on the rings. I guess if you measure the originals you might be able to match them up with something that is readily available. I don't have any leads on possible suppliers either, sorry.
