Franky - I thought it was automatically 5% until I spoke to the UK agent. He sent me the forms to fill in and mentioned 10% duty and 20% vat. When I brought up the 5% historic class he said "You can try for that but the car must be original". Just trying to give people all the facts as its a bit of a grey area so I don't want someone blaming me because I said it was 5% for 240Z's.

Here it's 27% and best to have 'prepaid' a valuation (online) in advance as proof of OEM spec....but it doesn't have to be as it left the factory.....a LOT of mechanical and body mods are accepted.

Why would anyone expect to get away with 'historic' duty - do you mean if the Z is RB or V8 engined ?

The customs people are going to compare your standard car with what specification document to uphold historic duty at 5% ?

Just a bit of info for those thinking of importing. Do not assume you will get away with historic duty and be prepaid to pay the full 32% on the TOTAL cost of the car and getting it here. The car must be totally standard, as it left the factory.

I'm assuming the 32% is on the black car.

I have one that came back last week, has dealer fit alloys and an aftermarket tape player only parts that are not standard still only paid 5%.

Why have they charged you the higher amount, the engine cc is not written on the pink slip, and receipt from Yevgen will only say Datsun 240Z.

Would then be down to colour change ?

I have to obtain from Nissan here a 'conformity file' which lists the complete specification per car and model. Customs can (if desired but in practice don't) compare a car to this but in fact, the valuation with photos serves as 'proof' of the car as OEM.

The same conformity file serves for the 'MOT' and ultimately is filed when final vehicule registration is performed.

How can you in the UK 'prove' that the car is OEM or otherwise or alternatively, how can the Customs prove that a car is otherwise ?

Do 'they' compare to Euro spec ?.....and if the imported car is not OEM USA spec....and (for the benefit of the Count) what if it is JDM or another RHD export destination country ?

Sounds like a bowl of pot-noodles to me.....
