5th to 4th shift

heres another topic up for discussion.
i have a jap 300 (91) and a uk 300(90) both of which have same prob. which leads me to believe that this is a common quirk. i havent owned either car for very long so i am discovering and learning things as a "fresher", and enjoying it!!! nicest two cars i ever owned.
anyhow, i have difficulty in downshifting from 5th to 4th...i.e. doesnt want to go in unless guided very carefully.
my theory is two possibilities.....
1. &nbsp; the universal linkage between the shift and the gearbox is worn..if so can it be adjusted?<img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

2. &nbsp; the plastic bushes eitherside of the shift are worn and allowing excessive lateral play and causing misalignment of linkages???

Since i have two of these cars with this problem surely somebody else must have had this potentially dangerous prob.

feeeeeeeedback please.

if i discover a solution i will post it immed.

thanks in advance

The control rod is quite short and the universal joint robust - I have never heard of a problem with this area.
The plastic bushes at the base of the gear lever frequently wear out, but there is then very obvious lateral free play in the stick. This could lead to baulking the gear selection. They are cheaply and fairly easily replaced. Check also the rubber bush in the upper holder to which a bolt of the gear lever support bracket is attached. These are known to break.

You can do all of this through the tunnel aperture after removing centre console and boots (3) but spanners with the right offset on the head will help. You can also inspect the control rod at this time.

thanks mike,
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; have had a quick look around shift lever and nothing appears out of order ,only a lateral playof approx 8 to 10mm which appears to be in universal joint...eeeeeek!

Just checked the price of the control rod / universal joint assy and it is a surprisingly reasonable £42.80 + VAT. Stock, however, is in Japan......
Looks as if you can replace it via access through the top plate on the box and knocking out a roll pin on the selector lever, but box probably needs to be out of the car to gain access to the check ball plug, spring and ball on the left side which also have to be removed.....

thanks for checking price for bits mike. yes, surprisingly cheap....especially ifthis is the cure.

im hoping some nice 300z owner is going to post here and say ..."oh the 5th to 4th problem, simple, all you gotta do is......"
bzzzzzzz

Sorry to wee on your bonfire!

The 5th to 4th problem is generally a synchromesh problem, try replacing your gear oil to redline mt90, that might alleviate it for a considerable period of time!

I hope it is the cheaper options, do a search on Twin turbo.net!
