240Z Hatch

Hi All. My 72 240 has a hatch fitted by PO that HAD the vents, before I had them welded shut.This hatch is off an earlier 240.
The hatch is an excellent fit to the body on the outside, but there is a gap between the rubber seal and the hatch where the hinges are.. The flange that holds the rubber seal at the hinge area takes a bit of a bend down to accomodate the hinge. The hatch at this area goes straight, resulting in a gap about quater inch wide and six inches long. Not good when trying to fume proof the cabin.
My question is -are all the 240 hatches the same in this area. Seems odd the designers would have made such a glaring mistake in sealing the body.

As far as I Know, all the 240Z Hatches were the same in respect of the fit to the Bodyshell. Maybe someone on here knows differently, but we have found that the early or late-types swap over & fit perfectly.

As time goes on, the upstand/lip on the Bodyshell can become corroded, & yours might have been replaced at some time in the past. Difficult to judge how high to make a new item to seal properly yet allow the Hatch to sit flush.

Best advice would be to take it to a good Panelbeaters ( preferably Classic Car specialists who will take the time & trouble ) and see what they can do for you. Nothing is un-sortable by the right Guys - it's just finding them in the first place.

The body on the car is very rust free, so no problem there.
The gap between the rubber strip and the hatch is only noticible when you have the hatch nearly shut, and peer through the gap. The body area where the hinges fit is formed down about quater inch to fit the hinge thickness. I have rectified the fuming by sticking pieces of self adhesive foam rubber about six inches long, to the inner hatch where the hinges are.
