I've just finished restoring my 240Z. &nbsp; The handbrake does not work very effectively. &nbsp; When pulled up it just comes to a dead stop. &nbsp;Up to this point there is no resistance or spring what ever. &nbsp; When pulled rreally hard it does not even hold the car. &nbsp;Help!! <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

Your handbrake cable may be siezed at the rear so it doesn't pull the drums out. Or, the slide adjuster which is located in the transmission tunnel is so far out that it isn't pulling the cable at all. It's a bit of a pain to get at because the prop shaft is in the way.
Hope this is of some help <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

As far as I can remember I had to put in a big sleeve spacer in the adjuster to make it pull the cable. &nbsp;Should I have to do this. &nbsp;Could the cable be stretched too much? &nbsp;Perhaps this may be the problem. &nbsp;I'll investigate.

sounds like the handbrake cable has stretched the same as mine did, doh, so what I had to do was to remove the adjusting rod which is above the propshaft and cut alot more thread onto the rod your local garage should be able to do this for you cheaply hope fully otherwise you can probably buy a tap and die thread cutting set from your local hardware shop and do it yourself,This will give you alot more adjustment.
Hope this helps as it worked for mine. <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Have you checked to see if you brake shoes are contacting the drums?

To check this when you slip the drums onto the wheel studs there should be minimal clearance between the drum and shoes.

To adjust the shoes there is a blind grommet in the brake backing plate that you can remove.  Use a flat blade screwdriver to rotate the brake shoe adjuster until you just start to feel/hear the shoes contact the drum.  (Rotate the drum as you make the adjustments).

Partially remove the drum to see if the shoes are concentric to the drum.  Use small hammer and a block of wood to adjust the position of the shoes.  If you don't undertake this procedure you'll end up with uneven shoe wear.

Otherwise, as the others who've responded have suggested you probably have a stretched hand brake cable. <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

Thanks for all the advice.  Appreciated!  The shoes are adjusted OK without making them bind unnecessarily.

I like the sound of rethreading the adjustment rod.  I'll try that before going to the expense of buying a new cable.

As I said I have already put a long spacer on the end of the rod but maybe this wasn't enough.

Cheers,

Andrew. <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
