So...where is the market for....:

I'll let you know when it's sold ;)

Where is the market ?
In terms of geographical location the last 240Z project went to France, the last few 260Z projects were sold in UK and the last 280Z project went to Cyprus but maybe that only obtusely answers your equally obtuse question ?

There is always a good market for solid rust free project cars at sensible prices. This one may look scruffy but it is a gem underneath, see through the superficial cosmetic appearance to the most important issue of originality and rust free panelwork, chassis legs, floors etc. The exposed surface rust will disappear when the car subject to blast media as part of restoration process. Granted the interior is not the best ever seen, in fact may be the worst, but even cars that may look a bit better inside still need the same dash and seat work in the end.

I'm not commenting critically or obtusely upon the 1st glance condition of the car and the interior and I'd rather have to replace the insides than the outside !

I'm just wondering where these project cars fit in the market (s) because one sees prices all over the place ; I can't understand someone wanting to use (as traditionally was the want) an £11k imported car to save a UK car....unless prices have risen so much when said conversions used to be done with $500s !

Are (UK) buyers keeping them LHD or not, are they only owners of their import buy and not a 'shed'...in a shed awaiting a new skin ?

Obstinately, I repeat the obtuse question - where (or perhaps who, what) is the market ?

That's just the sort of car I buy, so to answer your question Sean. The market is for buyers like me.

The market is usually from buyers who want to build their own bespoke Z and have the peace of mind in knowing the work has been done to their own exacting (hopefully) standards and who will more than likely see a financial return from their efforts to sweeten the picture even more on completion if/when they eventually choose to sell on.

No two buyers are the same though, some will do most/all of the work themselves, others will commission an entire build with one restorer should that restorer have the capacity to do all aspects of restoration or sometimes just paint/body is farmed out etc etc

The most financially astute starting point for any restoration is with a genuinely 95%+ rust free car as original and straight as possible. This is why we both sometimes wonder at the point of importing some of the lhd sheds that we see advertised ( often at prices that you would expect to buy a decent rust free car ) which are little better than the usual UK patchwork quilts. Leave the rusty cars Stateside please.

Fully agree with the above. I think these cars have to be reasonably priced - if so, they won't hang around long. There's a lot of difference in ££££ (when it comes to resto work) between buying a car such as the one featured here and similar if not more money in some cases for similar looking cars that are as rotten as a peach!

I'll more than 95% agree with this point. Surace 'oxydation' is nothing - bit-o brillo and elbox grease'll remove that.:smash:

I actually bought the 280Z that Chris mentioned had gone to Cyprus.
The plan is to have it ready as a future restoration project and I'm going to keep it LHD (and L28E)!
It is in really great condition and a good solid base for a project, especially when compared with my 260Z.
I bought it without seeing it but Chris had sent numerous photos from all round the car and it was 100% as described!
It ticked all the boxes for me, even though it has an auto box, as I have the 5 speed coming out of the 260Z when the swap takes place.

Congratulations Rich! It's been a long time coming :)

Project thread please? :D

Ha! Trying to stop procrastinating and thus it was time to get on with it! Although it could be some time before there is anything to report project-wise. Once the car is in Cheshire and I've had a chance to properly go through everything, I'll begin to get an idea of how I'm going to proceed. It's going to be a slow burn though - I'm not in a hurry and want to do everything exactly the right way without compromise. For that, I first need to replenish the coffers! Thus I might be offloading a few bits and bobs so support my efforts through watching the classifieds!

No - going RHD. Styling will inevitably, given my predilections, be JDM resto-mod (arches likely for the chop). Not set in stone though, as I've got a few variations in mind and haven't settled 100% on final form and colour. Engine will ultimately be the 3.1 currently in boxes around my garage, with ITBs. And probably one of your exhausts Sean!

In the meantime, I may even be tempted by the rat look and get it mobile as is (with new seats though!!,)... We will have to see. Depends on life stuff like time and cash.

JDM with arches....isn't JDM unless you add a "G-nose"....it's more Yankee-street-hooligan machine !

I like the rat-look and with that engine combination you'll scare some shiny Porsches:devil:

Nice one, if and when the Sam sells, that's jut the sort of thing I'd be doing...

And I agree with you Sean, I'd go G-nose too...
