Ok, new problem! How do I take off the nuts that hold the half shafts to the diff? There doesn't seem to be enough room to get a socket or a spanner in there.

!. Let's hope you have the special half height nuts on there!
2. Needs a slim spanner (no socket will fit as I remember) and even that will only go in with the shaft at certain angles / positions of rotation. You have to fiddle about with different positions to figure out what will work for you...

I was hoping I was just being thick and not seeing some easy way of getting to them.

I have a big problem... took all the rear suspension out then found that the half shaft on the drivers side has a nut missing. No problem, I have spare nuts that will fit... but then rotated the half shaft and found the nut directly opposite isn't on all the way, looks like it might be cross threaded, and is almost completely rounded. I can just about get the end of a spanner on there, but not enough room or leverage to even come to close to moving it.

Morbias,
When I tightened mine (obviously do in reverse) I had a spanner on the nut, wedged, and turned the propshaft as a lever to tighten it.

I had to resort to cutting into it with a dremel, just up to the thread. Then I wedged a screwdriver in there and tapped it with a hammer until it loosened up. Cutting into it was definitely a sweaty bum moment

When I put the new nuts on I did as you said, it's a bugger without someone to help you out!

Got one side painted today too.

Cheers, I think it turned out pretty good. Though in a few weeks I'm going to have the strange situation of the underneath of the car looking better than the top.
